"So perfectly toasty that if tasted blind you might swear you can smell beautiful toasty oak. Take a moment, delve in, and you realise it’s the lightly toasted brioche, glazed with leatherwood honey – the signature of a gloriously aged Hunter semillon. That’s just the beginning; there’s coconut blossoms, flamed lime twist seconds before it garnishes a cocktail and rock pools in the cool of the morning. A silky, almost rich, nectar-like texture is a fascinating contrast to what you expect from just 11% alcohol and speaks of the flavour concentration of the fruit. The high natural acidity is so well integrated that it appears delicate, yet is bracing enough to freshen up rich dishes. Drink with pan-fried snapper, baby asparagus and citrus-kissed beurre blanc."

"ILR Reserve is a formidable thing! And a treat. A broader, more potent expression, perhaps a little more forward than some releases, but still with stamina and verve. Loaded with lemon verbena, lemon curd and ginger, licks of green apple, lanolin and spritzy, minerally acidity in tow. A touch of toastiness, some sweet almond and a bit of nashi pear too. The palate is formidable in concentration and drive, a power-packed yet lively feast of fruit and maturing, savoury flavours with that omnipresent sizzle of grapefruity acidity on show. In a great place, complex, layered, sweet, savoury, fresh, ageing. Right on. Bravo."

Harvesting all by hand. The fruit was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Neutral yeasts were used for the fermentation, bottled in July. No oak and no malolactic ferment, only stainless steel. At 6 years of age on release, the colour is just starting to show some development with yellow tints complimenting the green edges. Lifted lemon curd and floral notes heading to bees wax, brioche and toast. Lively lime juice, Bickfords cordial characters are backed by a superb zesty acidity. The magic of Hunter Valley semillon on display with texture, fruit weight and great length from a wine that sees no oak. The ILR Reserve Semillon is released from the best years and 2015 is a beauty. Drinking well now but will improve with many year to come.

Brokenwood

What began in 1970 as a weekend winemaking project in the Hunter Valley for three Sydney solicitors has gone on to become one of Australia’s most iconic wineries. Established by none other than James Halliday, Tony Albert, and John Beeston, Brokenwood started out as a part-time passion but bigger things beckoned and over the years, Brokenwood has boasted a roll call of winemakers to boot, notably current chief winemaker and managing director, Iain Riggs, who joined the team in 1982.

Iain shook things up on his arrival, introducing new winery equipment and the first white wines to the Brokenwood portfolio. Since then, Brokenwood’s reputation as a white winemaker has come to equal its one as a red wine producer, with its flagship ILR Reserve Semillon and Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz highly sought after around the world.
