Turkey Flat has some of the oldest vines in the world, with shiraz vines in the original vineyard, known as 'Section One', verified to date back to its initial planting in 1847 by a Silesian immigrant, Johann Frederick August Fiedler.

The vineyard was named for the large number of bush turkeys which still, to this day, roam the area.

    • Description

The current owners, the Schulz family, purchased the property in 1865, and developed a thriving butchery in addition to dairy farming. Current and fourth generation owners Peter and Christie Schulz switched focus entirely to wine production in 1990, shortly after taking over. Further purchases in 2007 have expanded total cultivation area by another 30 acres.

Viticulture is a key focus, especially given the age of the vines. The fruit is dry grown wherever possible, save in conditions of drought or severe heatwaves, solely to keep the vines healthy.

Nestled on the fringes of Tanunda in the iconic Barossa Valley, Turkey Flat Winery welcomes you to a historic journey through vines dating back to 1847. Their charming cellar door, a lovingly restored bluestone building that once served as the Schulz family's butcher shop, invites you to explore their heritage and craftsmanship.

The name "Turkey Flat" pays homage to the early Prussian settlers who marveled at the Plains Bustard, a magnificent native bird that graced the fertile flats along Tanunda Creek. This bird, now rare, symbolizes their deep connection to the land and its history, featured on their labels as a tribute. With the 1847 Shiraz vines, among the oldest in Australia, at the heart of their family-owned estate, they blend traditional Rhône varietals and honor the Barossa Valley's rich cultural heritage.

Their commitment to sustainability extends from the vineyards, where they nurture a biodiverse ecosystem with native grasses and cover crops, to their winemaking process, where they harvest rainwater and use solar power. Turkey Flat consistently crafts award-winning wines that showcase the Barossa Valley's captivating evolution and history. Join them on a journey where tradition meets innovation, and the essence of the Barossa Valley comes alive in every bottle.
