    • Description

This wine is an excellent example of the best reds that Clare Valley can produce. Made as an homage to the seldom-seen Cabernet Malbecs made by enigmatic Wendouree. Sourced from a vineyard in the upper Clare right next to this mysterious winery's home vineyards.

Lovely restrained nose. Herbal notes of dried oregano and bay leaf. Blue fruits & hints of violet beautifully supported by tones of old leather. This wine will only improve with age. Continuing from the nose, dried herbs, blue and red fruits. Fantastic tannins, fine acid and a wonderful length.

This is from Cabernet and Malbec from the Lodge Hill Vineyard. Both vineyards planted in the late ‘90’s. Soil is loam over bedrock of slate. No new oak used as want to maintain the varietal expression of Cabernet and Malbec and both of these grapes provide plenty of structure (tannin and acid). Cab goes into 300L and Malbec into 2,500L Foudre. The Lodge Hill property is one of the highest in the valley at 480-520m and makes very elegant reds.

The fist vineyard that Jim Barry planted in 1964 was Malbec(block 1) and Cabernet (block 2) and this was his first blend so Cabernet Malbec is something that we have been making in Clare as a family for over 60 years. 2016 and 2018 are the 2 best vintages we have seen for reds in Clare in the last 20 years.

    Jim Barry Wines

Jim Barry Wines is an inaugural member of Australia's First Families of Wine. Founded back in 1959 by Jim and his wife Nancy, the winery has a great track record for producing high-quality wines particular in the realm of Riesling where the two helped establish the Clare Valley as a benchmark for the variety.

Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the region having graduated as only the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the prestigious Roseworthy Agricultural College back in 1947. Having worked for 2 decades at the Clarevale Co-operative, he then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969.

10ha of vineyards throughout the subregion of Armagh and the greater Clare Valley are key to the longevity of Jim Barry wines. The terroir of Clare Valley with its night-time temperature-drops & limestone soils makes for great Riesling and provides the necessary acid and structure to assist long-term cellaring of the reds.

Although Jim Barry passed away in 2004, the winery is in good hands with the family still very much a part of the operation. His philosophy was to make wines that are both enjoyable on release and reward long term cellaring and he was posthumously given the 'Legends Hall of Fame' award in 2014. Jim's sons Peter, Mark & John all play a part and now 3rd generation Tom (Gourmet Traveller's 'Young Winemaker of the Year 2014) and Sam work as winemaker and commercial manager for Jim Barry Wines.

Their most popular wines include the highly collectible Armagh, Benbournie, First Eleven, The Lodge Hill Shiraz, The Barry Brothers, The Florita, The Lodge Hill Riesling, Watervale Riesling and more.

    I wish!

Unfortunately your freight company (Aramex) delivered my wine to the wrong address and did not recover it. Since there was only one bottle left in your stocks I did not get to taste the wine so cannot review it.
I did accept another wine as a replacement.

    A cracker

A loverly Cabernet Malbec that deserves the reserve label. Fruity elegant with a super bouquet, it's like drinking a rose. It has 6 years on it. I was going to put them in the cellar but there is no need.
