Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes for Castarede 1965 Bas Armagnac (40%)

Appearance: Deep amber with mahogany reflections, showing its long aging in oak barrels.

Nose: An expressive and layered bouquet of dried fruits, including figs and prunes, interwoven with notes of toasted almonds, caramelised orange peel, and rich vanilla. Hints of tobacco, leather, and sweet spices add complexity.

Palate: Silky and well-structured, with a refined balance between warmth and elegance. Flavours of dark chocolate, dried apricots, and nutmeg lead into deeper notes of oak, roasted coffee, and rancio, characteristic of well-aged Armagnac.

Finish: Exceptionally long, with lingering notes of spiced fruitcake, toasted oak, and a gentle, warming spice that gradually fades into a velvety softness.

Overall: A beautifully mature and complex Bas Armagnac that showcases the finesse of Castarede's craftsmanship. Perfect for slow sipping, best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass to fully appreciate its depth and evolution in the glass.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

The Castarède 1965 Vintage Bas-Armagnac was distilled in 1965 using the traditional Armagnac alambic — a continuous column still unique to the appellation, which produces a more robust and aromatic spirit than the pot stills used in Cognac. The 1965 vintage drew on Baco 22A grapes, a hybrid variety widely planted in Bas-Armagnac at that time. Following distillation, the spirit was filled into Gascon black oak (chêne de Gascogne) and then oak casks and aged for many decades in the Castarède cellars until bottling, developing the classic vintage character of crystallised fruits, almonds, dried prune, nutmeg, and candied peel. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Provenance

Armagnac Castarède was founded in 1832 in the Bas-Armagnac sub-region of Gascony, south-west France — the oldest and most highly regarded zone of the three Armagnac appellations, known for its sandy boulbènes soils. The house is one of the oldest in the region and remains in the Castarède family to this day, now led by Florence Castarède — the sixth generation of the family — from the family's Château de Maniban estate. The vineyards are planted with traditional Armagnac grape varieties including Folle Blanche, Colombard, and Ugni Blanc. The house is renowned for its library of vintage Armagnacs, carefully aged in oak casks for decades without interruption until bottling.
