Tasting Notes

There is something quietly compelling about a vintage Armagnac like the 1996 from Delord. It doesn’t arrive with polish or fanfare, nor does it try to. Instead, it leans into its roots in Bas-Armagnac, favouring character over precision and texture over gloss.

On the nose, it opens with baked orchard fruit, apricot and stewed plum, layered with vanilla, old oak, and a gentle spice. With time, a more rustic edge appears, a faint herbal lift that grounds it firmly in place. Nothing feels forced. It simply unfolds.

The palate is where it settles in. There’s weight and a slightly oily texture carrying flavours of prune, fig, and raisin. Toasted oak and tobacco sit underneath, adding structure without taking over. It’s not about elegance, but depth and honesty, something more tactile than refined.

The finish lingers with spiced oak and dried fruit, fading into a dry, lightly tannic close that keeps things balanced.

This isn’t a flawless spirit, and that’s the point. The 1996 Delord offers authenticity over perfection, delivering age, warmth, and character in a way that feels unpolished but entirely real.

Critic Scores

The 1996 from Delord is a composed, mid-weight Bas-Armagnac showing dried apricot, prune and soft vanilla oak, underpinned by a gentle, earthy rusticity. The palate carries weight and texture, with tobacco, spice and a savoury edge building through the mid-palate. The finish is long, warming and lightly tannic. This is not about polish, but authenticity and balance, delivering genuine vintage character with clarity and confidence.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

Delord's 1996 vintage Bas-Armagnac was distilled from Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Baco 22A grapes grown on the Lannepax estate in the 1996 harvest. Distilled in the traditional Armagnacais continuous column still — the apparatus unique to the Armagnac appellation — the eau-de-vie was filled into Gascon oak barrels and aged in the Delord cellars for over two decades. During this extended maturation, the 1996 has developed from its initial raw freshness into a refined vintage Armagnac with notes of dried fruit, spiced oak, vanilla, and gentle rancio. Bottled at 40% ABV.

Provenance

Maison Delord was established in 1893 by Prosper Delord, a travelling distiller who settled in Lannepax in the Gers department of south-west France. Lannepax lies in the heart of the Bas-Armagnac appellation — the most highly regarded of the three Armagnac sub-regions — on the sandy boulbènes soils considered ideal for growing Armagnac varietals of outstanding quality. The house has remained in family ownership across four generations, maintaining a library of vintage expressions that document the character of individual harvest years. Maison Delord is one of the important traditional producers of Bas-Armagnac, also producing the Comte de Lamaestre prestige vintage selection from the same cellars in Lannepax.
