Tasting Notes

Amber tends to brown, with a mild nose, dominated by the wood of slowly matured rancio, with a supple, caressing mouth in which the alcohol gives way to notes of wood, rancio, cocoa, chocolate and more as you warm the glass.

About the producer

The story began with a Swiss family who fell in love with the land of Armagnac, in Gers, Gascony. At the turn of the century, Paul and Marguerite Gessler moved to Joy. Contrary to what one might think, Joy is the name of the vineyard. Having inherited this love from their parents, Andre and Vronique Gessler, then their sons Olivier, became aware of the rich soils and favourable exposure of some of the parcels. They gradually abandoned polyculture in order to devote a large portion of the estate to vine-growing. They focused on their love of white grape varieties in particular. Then they embarked on a quality-oriented process to produce generous, modern and refined de Gascogne wines, as well as a carefully selected range of supple and fruity Bas-Armagnacs. Today, the 4th generation is at work in the form of Vanessa and Kevin Gessler, Oliviers daughter and son, who keep their love for this terroir alive.

Distillation & Provenance

Distillation

Domaine de Joÿ's Hors d'Âge is a 15-year-old Bas-Armagnac produced from estate-grown Ugni Blanc, Baco 22A, and Folle Blanche grapes on the Panjas vineyards. The Hors d'Âge designation denotes Armagnac of a minimum ten years of barrel ageing; the Domaine de Joÿ expression specifies a minimum of 15 years. Distilled in the traditional Armagnacais continuous column still, the eau-de-vie was aged in Gascon oak casks on the estate. The extended maturation has developed a balanced Bas-Armagnac with notes of dried fruit, vanilla, toffee, and oak spice, with the supple and fruity character that characterises the Domaine de Joÿ style. Bottled at 40.5% ABV in a 500ml presentation.

Provenance

Domaine de Joÿ is a family estate situated in Panjas, Gers, at the heart of the Bas-Armagnac appellation in Gascony, south-west France. The estate was established by the Gessler family — Swiss immigrants who came to love the land of the Gers — and is now in its fourth generation of family ownership under Vanessa and Kévin Gessler, grandchildren of founders André and Véronique Gessler. The domaine farms 190 hectares of vines, of which ten per cent are dedicated to Armagnac distillation on Bas-Armagnac's distinctive sandy boulbènes soils. Domaine de Joÿ produces both Côtes de Gascogne wines and a carefully selected range of vintage and aged Bas-Armagnacs from its own estate-grown grapes.
