Ruadh Mhor — Gaelic for 'big red' — is the heavily peated expression from Glenturret Distillery in Crieff, Perthshire, the Highland distillery that claims the title of Scotland's oldest licensed distillery. Glenturret produces Ruadh Mhor using barley peated to approximately 80ppm — a phenol level exceeding most Islay distilleries, and higher than any Islay expression other than Bruichladdich's Octomore. The peat character is Highland rather than coastal, producing vegetal, earthy, and herbal smoke rather than the saline, maritime peat of Islay.
