Tasting Notes

100% Grand Cru fruit. Pinot Noir & Chardonnay blend. The nose is a combination of ripe citrus fruits with a buttery overtone and flowery finish. The flavours are fresh and vibrant, of peaches, melons and raspberry with light hazelnut nuance adding depth and complexity. A truly beautiful wine, and exceptional value.

The family Autreau is an old family from Champillon - ancient documents certify their presence since 1670. This family is linked to the farming of the land and to the Champagne production as far back as it goes - the beginning of the 18th century when Dom Perignon found bubbles in his wine.

Critic Scores

Grape growers in the village of Champillon since 1670, led by third generation Laurent Autréau, their vineyards perch on the hillsides overlooking Epernay. Disgorged in June 2024. A blend of pinot noir and chardonnay this opens with lemon skin, peach nectar and toasted praline. There is wet limestone and friable pumice stone with long tingling chords of acidity. Some pink sea salt flakes and a lemon yoghurt creaminess, this is layered with chimes of lees whilst maintaining its poise and lively persistence. Gorgeous on its own but could equally see you through seafood, white meats and into cheeses as well. A beautiful framed champagne from a shining Grand Cru site.

A blend of both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Grand Cru vineyards promises some bubbly excitement.

The colour is a deep but shimmering pale gold. A lovely toasty nose with hints of raspberries, peaches, melon and stonefruits, with touches of almonds and hazelnuts. Some underlying lemon curd notes as well. Lots of life here, this is a bright, well balanced and quite rich style of Champers. The Pinot seems especially to the fore at this early stage. A pleasing line of vibrant acidity runs the length. Any time over the next six years.

Distinctive bouquet with pear and lemon, preserved lemon and apple, a fine autolysis complexity and chalk-like mineral quality. Lovely weight and crispness, dry, fresh, saline and mineral. A fine wine with a coarse - silk textured mousse, high acidity, distinctively dry and floral on the finish. Flavours of lemon and apple and a fresh, crisp brioche quality on the finish. Well made with ready to drink qualities from 2022 through 2029.

There is a great depth of flavor to this wine. It is rich, but has a strong mineral edge that cuts through the ripe white and citrus fruits. Balanced between dryness and fruit, this structured wine is ready to drink.

About this Wine

Champagne

Champagne is a wine region to the north-east of Paris where wine has been grown since the Romans first planted in the 5th century and the region is most well known for the sparkling wine that goes by the regions name.

Champagne is made from 3 grapes. The two red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white grape Chardonnay. All three are commonly blended though a ‘blanc de blanc’ meaning ‘white from white’ indicates that only Chardonnay was used. Conversely a ‘blanc de noir’ or ‘white from black’ indicates that the two red grapes were used.
A common misconception is that Champagne was invented by Dom Pérignon. Although this is not the case, he made considerable contributions to the quality and production methods used in the region. The very first bottles of Champagne were created by accident, and coined ‘the devil’s wine’ for all the popping corks. Sparkling wine in Australia was referred to as Champagne but this practise has long been disallowed.

Methode Champenoise is the traditional method by which Champagne is produced and if you see Millisime on a bottle, it represents the fact that the wine comes from a particular vintage rather than being blended, which is the more common practice.

Icons such as Dom Pérignon and Kristal are world reknowned, but we find as much pleasure in the smaller Champagne houses such as Gosset and Jacquinot. Magnums are perfect for the festive occasions and half bottles are also available.
