Tasting Notes

Sourced from the Old Patch. The Old Hillside Shiraz comes from the younger vines on the vineyard, which have an average age of 50 years. The fruit was handpicked and sorted in the vineyard before fermentation took place in our open-top vats. After fermentation, the wine was matured for 14 months in mostly newer 2500L French oak casks.

Elegant style of Shiraz that shows good balance between vibrant fruit and savoury spice, along with classic Hunter Valley wet earth. The oak is only a minor component and the tannins provide structure and depth on the back palate.

Critic Scores

The Old Hillside is the vines around the Old Patch, that are not quite as old. These wines up on the mountainside have a distinct personality, not dissimilar to Old Paddock and Old Hill from Mount Pleasant. Obviously it’s all that ‘Old’ in the names that make it so. I wish there was an ‘Old Mate’ vineyard.

Blackberry, violet, pretty and perfumed, but with a modest earthy bass, slight unripe strawberry acidity, especially on the finish, but flesh around it, and good length with a bit of tomato acidity. Length is good, mind you, Many good things, but perhaps a little too sappy? See how you go.

About this Wine

New South Wales

Home to 14 official wine regions, New South Wales offers a diverse and wide ranging expanse to produce wines that appeal to every palate.
From Australia’s oldest continuous wine region – the famous Hunter Valley – to exciting new cool climate regions such as Orange, the Southern Highlands and Tumbarumba, these regions can be found to produce some of the best Australian Wine around. Recognised as the second largest wine producing state in Australia, New South Wales is also the most populous state with its wine consumption far outpacing the region's wine production. Although the Hunter Valley region is well known, the majority of wineries are located along the Murray and Darling Rivers (in the south-east of the state) which supplies water for many of the regions wineries.
Other regions within New South Wales includes the Canberra District, Cowra, Gundagai, Hastings River, Hilltops, Mudgee, New England, Perricoota, Riverina and the Shoalhaven Coast.
