    • Description

Les Mitans is celebrated as one of the most refined and cerebral expressions of Volnay, exemplified by Leroux's elegant 2021 vintage. The term 'Mitans,' derived from old French for center, aptly describes this Cru's central location within the appellation, nestled beneath the village on the slopes. Leroux's 0.65-hectare plot is situated near the Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Barre and extends into the Mitans l'Ormeau lieu-dit. The soil, a blend of fine clay and limestone, coupled with 50-year-old vines, contributes to the wine's unique character. A subtle use of whole bunch adds nuance to the winemaking process this year.

Widely acknowledged as one of the most graceful and delicately structured expressions of Volnay, Leroux's 2021 Les Mitans lives up to this reputation. Its pale color and elegantly fragrant bouquet, reminiscent of Volnay, offer a modest volume with notes of strawberry, providing just enough fruit to linger on the palate. Despite being one of the more delicate wines of the vintage, its persistence is noteworthy.

The unique terroir of Les Mitans, with its limestone-infused clay soil and the influence of Leroux's winemaking expertise, shines through in this limited production of only 6 barrels, representing half a crop. The wine's finesse and potential for evolution make it a noteworthy addition to Leroux's portfolio and a testament to the distinctive character of Volnay's Les Mitans.

    Benjamin Leroux

Branching out to launch his own label in 2007, young talented winemaker Benjamin Leroux honed his craft at Burgundy's famed Domaine Comte Armand.

Starting his wine studies in Beaune at the age of 13, Leroux moved on to become manager of Domaine Comte Armand at just 26, a position that he still maintains while running his own label. Drawing from his own parcels and purchased fruit from selected growers, Leroux crafts a wide range of small-batch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a variety of appellations throughout the Côte-d'Or. Over half of these vineyards are organic or biodynamic and none are under the influence of herbicides or pesticides.

A respectful relationship between Leroux and his growers ensures that he controls important details such as low yields and ripeness levels. He is considered by his contemporaries in Burgundy as one of the region's most influential winemakers.
