Tasting Notes

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 2012 is an iconic expression of Hunter Valley Semillon, crafted exclusively from fruit grown on Tyrrell’s finest old-vine, dry-grown vineyards. Renowned for its purity, precision and exceptional longevity, Vat 1 has helped establish Australian Semillon as one of the world’s great age-worthy white wines.

Sourced from a premium private cellar, this mature 2012 vintage reveals the remarkable evolution of classic Hunter Valley Semillon. Bottle age brings added depth and complexity, with vibrant citrus and herbal characters developing into richer layers of toast, honey and lanolin. Beneath it all, natural freshness, fine structure and distinctive regional character remain beautifully intact.

Semillon doesn’t get any better than this. Refined, complex and highly collectible, Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon 2012 is a distinguished example of premium Australian white wine and a superb expression of one of the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated varieties.

Critic Scores

Vat 1, year in, year out, rarely sets a foot wrong.
Honey and some soapy perfume, white fruit like pears, plus mixed citrus and a flicker of pepper. Light in body, yet delivers plenty of flavour, ripe lime, lovely clean acidity – almost a sherbetty character – then a finish that’s light, delicate but very long. Precision and beauty. Good bet for the cellar too. Drink 2018-2035.

From old, dry-grown vineyards dating as far back as '23, hand picking and sorting eliminated botrytis, leaving a pure display of citrus fruits headed by lemon, with lime and grapefruit also in the mix, all framed by hallmark acidity. A wine in its infancy, its best years a long way into the next decade and beyond. Drink by 2040.
