    • Description

Mel Chester and crew have gone south to uncover a different style of Pinot; a layered and powerful one with fruit sourced from southern Tasmania.

Coming from a single vineyard, and trucked and sailed across the Bass Strait direct to the Yarra overnight. Made with a variety of tactics - some whole bunch, some whole berry, fermenting in both oak and stainless - you'll find a much deeper and broodier style of Pinot here.

Lots of dark fruit flavours, firm tannin on the sides and a good kick of acidity - serious quality all around and still expresses that signature Giant Steps style. Built for both cellaring or drinking now...

    Giant Steps

Established in 1997 by Phil Sexton, Giant Steps has become a beacon of excellence in the Yarra Valley, renowned for its expressive wines with purity and finesse. The winery's name, inspired by John Coltrane’s iconic album “Giant Steps,” reflects its bold and innovative spirit. Under the guidance of winemaker Steve Flamsteed since 2003, Giant Steps has earned the prestigious James Halliday Wine Companion 2025 Winery of the Year award, alongside 20 Trophies and 50 Gold Medals from major wine shows.

Giant Steps' vineyards, planted with a selection of clones tailored to the Yarra Valley’s conditions, produce exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery has received multiple accolades, including the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards Single Vineyard Trophy for the 2007 Sexton Chardonnay, 2009 Tarraford Chardonnay, and 2013 Applejack Pinot Noir. Recent awards include the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion Pinot Noir of the Year for the 2023 Applejack Pinot Noir, Best Shiraz Trophy for the 2022 Tarraford Vineyard Syrah, and Best Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy for the 2022 Sexton Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Melanie Chester, who became Head of Winemaking and Viticulture in 2021, continues to uphold Giant Steps' tradition of excellence. Her approach ensures that the wines express the diversity of their single vineyard sites, maintaining tight and transparent winemaking practices. This commitment to quality has led to multiple Winery of the Year titles from Wines & Spirits magazine and inclusion in the Wine & Spirits Top 100 list in various years.

The story of Giant Steps is a testament to the passion and dedication of its team, including founder Phil Sexton, winemaker Steve Flamsteed, grower Lou Primavera, and viticulturist Ray Guerin. Together, they have advanced Australia’s reputation for cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, offering wine enthusiasts a journey through the rich terroir of the Yarra Valley.
