Tasting Notes

Introduction to Frapin

Frapin is located in the centre of the Grande Champagne Premier Cru du Cognac region in the sleepy little town of Segonzac, the finest designated region in Cognac. It is the only merchant located in the town and only sells Cognacs produced from grapes sourced from its own 778 acre estate in the heart of the Grande Champagne region.

The Frapin family have been winegrowers since 1270 and mostly sold their Cognacs to Remy Martin, Hennessy, Courvoisier and other houses until the 1980's. Since 1984, when the Cointreau family took over what was then a forgotten brand, it has been selling increasing quantities of brandies. These brandies have been kept in new wood for longer than their competitors, so confident are they with the quality of it's brandies , the size of its stocks represent 18 years of sales (an amount of 2 to 3 times the quantity of the stocks held by its competitors).

Frapin keeps its best cognacs in new oak for up to 2 and a half years, depending on the amount of colour (and therefore tannin) the spirit has absorbed.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Its warm, golden highlights give it a beautiful straw colour, bearing witness to its time in new Limousin oak barrels. Aromas of vine and lime blossom, with a light touch of vanilla from its ageing in Limousin barrels promise the aromatic richness characteristic of a great cognac

Palate: Roundness, finesse and balance. Length on the palate due to a very special distillation over fine lees, with slight vanilla or toast notes, adding a touch of freshness and originality.

Overall: This is a good Cognac, better than its age would have foretold. It probably wouldn’t match well with a cigar, but otherwise would work in just about any setting. While it is not designated VS, the spirit is aged for a min of 4 years

Distillation

Frapin 1270 Grande Champagne Cognac is an entry-level expression named for the year in which the family's vine growing history at the Château de Fontpinot is first documented. Produced from 100% estate-grown Ugni Blanc on the deep chalk soils of the Grande Champagne premier cru, the cognac is distilled on the lees in Charentais copper pot stills and aged in Tronçais and Limousin oak barrels. The 1270 expression is designed to showcase the floral, elegant character of the Frapin house style at an accessible maturation level. Presented in a 1-litre format at 40% ABV.

Provenance

Maison Frapin is a family Cognac estate whose recorded history of wine growing at the Domaine du Château de Fontpinot in Segonzac, Grande Champagne, dates to 1270 — the oldest documented vine estate in the Cognac appellation. The house has been in family ownership for over 25 generations and is today led by Patrice Piveteau, with Béatrice Cointreau-Eijsman as president. Frapin farms 240 hectares of estate Ugni Blanc vines on the deep flinty-chalk soils of the Grande Champagne — the premier cru of the Cognac appellation — and distils exclusively on the lees in traditional Charentais copper pot stills.
