"Picked 22nd September. There was no frost damage here. Rich dense purple centre. Gloriously exuberant yet still with a sense of classical structure. Flamboyant raspberry, some meaty moments in the middle, a wealth of fruit throughout, absolutely singing in its young fruit style. Energy and precision together. More new oak and more stems compared to earlier vintages."

"Ripe, fresh and restrained aromas of red and dark currant and a variety of spice elements combine with intensely floral, earthy and sauvage-inflected nuances. I very much like the texture of the delicious medium-bodied flavours that possess good power and plenty of minerality that deliver excellent depth and length on the balanced finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. While there is a mild hint of backend warmth, this could eventually well be the best Corton that the domaine has produced."

"Surpassing the 2015 rendition, the 2016 Corton Grand Cru is the finest wine that the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti has produced to date from the holdings of Prince Florent de Merode. Wafting from the glass with notes of cassis, currant leaf, raspberries and menthol, discretely framed by new wood, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and intense, gaining in depth and dimension as it sits in the glass, with tangy underpinning acids and powdery tannins, culminating in a long finish. Aubert de Villaine recounted that the Domaine replanted a third of Corton-Bressandes while also grafting over the Merodes' young vines to their own massal selections of Pinot Fin. While this is built for four decade's evolution in the cellar, the balance and concentration are such that it could be drunk with pleasure in its youth. (William Kelley)"

"A vivid, darkish ruby hue, this has a vivacious perfume with a hint of stalks and something spicy and exotic. Oak and seductively plump red berry fruits co-mingle on the soft, silky-textured palate, immediately evident, with almost no hint of tannin - even though itâ€™s there. Is there enough acidity? Yes, probably - but although itâ€™s fresh and delicious, the length on the finish could be longer. (AR)"

"The 2016 Corton Grand Cru was picked on September 22 at 22hL/ha. It has an attractive and quite effervescent bouquet of red cherry, cranberry and light iron filing aromas that are beautifully defined. There is real class and sophistication here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well-judged acidity, but perhaps does not quite deliver the grip and density of very best Cortons that the domaine has made since 2009. This is more tensile and poised, lightly spiced with white pepper and earthy notes toward the finish and bitter cherry on the aftertaste. The finish conjures the image of someone looking around a room and wondering where it is, in the sense that it just wanders a little. It could be just a phase, and if so, this will merit a higher score. 420 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrowâ€™s annual in-bottle tasting in London. (NM)"

Domaine de la Romanee Conti

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, often abbreviated as DRC, is widely considered to be one of the most renowned wine producers in the world, and undoubtedly the best in the Burgundy region. This esteemed estate is responsible for crafting seven exceptional wines, including a single white made from Chardonnay grapes, and six reds made from Pinot Noir grapes, all sourced from the highest ranking Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy.

The history of this vineyard dates back to the early 1500s when it was cultivated by monks. Over time, ownership of the vineyard changed hands several times, eventually falling into the possession of the de Villaine family. In 1911, Edmund de Villaine took over as director of the estate and later sold shares to his friend Henry Leroy. The latter's financial stability ensured the estate's vineyards were maintained to the highest standards.

Presently, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is co-owned and operated by Aubert de Villaine, and Henri Roch, the grandson of Henry Leroy. All of the vineyards are farmed organically, and some even meet biodynamic standards. The yields from these vineyards are incredibly low, with it taking an average of three vines to produce a single bottle of wine. In the winery, the wine is moved using gravity to avoid the need for pumping, and no filtration takes place. Fining only occurs when necessary, and the wine is aged in 100% new French oak for up to 20 months before bottling.
