"An exceptionally dense purple. The bouquet suggests an exceptional wine. It has enormously more intensity than the preceding three wines, yet no sign of whole bunches, and just a light patina of oak. Rich mature fruit throughout. Dark strawberries with a suggestion of chocolate. Plump fruit backed by just enough acidity, long and graceful. Will these wines tighten up? Will tannins start to show beneath? For the moment they are smothered by the fruit. The longer in the glass, though, and the structure does appear. In terms of quality delivered in proportion to the fame of each appellation, the Echezeaux is the stand out wine from the Domaine this year. Drink from 2030-2045. Tasted: October 2022."

"Forward, spicy and richly textured, displaying concentration and density, leading to a lovely, lingering finish. DRC Echezeaux seemed to take a step forward this year in seriousness and intensity, in contrast to its normal demeanor of youthful exuberance. The largest share of the 4.67ha holding is in PoulaillÃ¨res, next to the heart of the vineyard in Echezeaux du Dessus. The grapes were picked on 30th August and 1st September, between two small rainstorms that helped the fruit finish its ripening to perfection. (Charles Curtis MW)"

"The 2020 Echezeaux Grand Cru is one of the standouts in this tasting. Opulent and sumptuous to the core, the Echezeaux is a real head-turner. I suppose it is not as complex as some of the other wines in this range, but as Aubert de Villaine once said to me about his Montrachet "You don't always want complex, do you?" A rush of dark blue/purplish fruit, spice, chocolate, spice and lavender races across the palate. Readers will find a racy, hedonistic Burgundy that will drink well with minimal cellaring. What a wine!"

"Note: from a total holding of 4.67 ha of 50+ year old vines from 2 different climats, 90% of which is in Les PoulaillÃ¨res, and the remainder is in Clos St. Denis. An exuberantly spicy and wonderfully floral nose exhibits additional aromas of poached plum, mocha, jasmine tea and an interesting hint of tangerine peel. The rich, concentrated and powerful bigger-bodied flavours possess an absolutely gorgeous mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that also buffers the firm core of ripe tannins shaping the stunningly long finish. This actually isn't quite as refined as the Petits Monts, but it is definitely more powerful and imposing, as well as slightly more structured."

Domaine de la Romanee Conti

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, often abbreviated as DRC, is widely considered to be one of the most renowned wine producers in the world, and undoubtedly the best in the Burgundy region. This esteemed estate is responsible for crafting seven exceptional wines, including a single white made from Chardonnay grapes, and six reds made from Pinot Noir grapes, all sourced from the highest ranking Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy.

The history of this vineyard dates back to the early 1500s when it was cultivated by monks. Over time, ownership of the vineyard changed hands several times, eventually falling into the possession of the de Villaine family. In 1911, Edmund de Villaine took over as director of the estate and later sold shares to his friend Henry Leroy. The latter's financial stability ensured the estate's vineyards were maintained to the highest standards.

Presently, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is co-owned and operated by Aubert de Villaine, and Henri Roch, the grandson of Henry Leroy. All of the vineyards are farmed organically, and some even meet biodynamic standards. The yields from these vineyards are incredibly low, with it taking an average of three vines to produce a single bottle of wine. In the winery, the wine is moved using gravity to avoid the need for pumping, and no filtration takes place. Fining only occurs when necessary, and the wine is aged in 100% new French oak for up to 20 months before bottling.
