Tasting Notes

Domaine Henri Bonneau is one of the most revered and historic producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with deep roots in the region dating back several generations. The domaine is known for its meticulous approach to viticulture and vinification, cultivating some of the most old-vine, low-yielding plots in the appellation. Henri Bonneau was famous for his traditional methods, using minimal intervention and aging his wines in large oak casks for extended periods, a technique that has contributed to the wines’ complexity, richness, and longevity.

The Cuvée des Célestines, one of the domaine’s most prestigious cuvées, is made from the estate's oldest vines and the best plots of land, showcasing the unique terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The 2009 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was marked by warm and dry conditions, resulting in wines that are rich, concentrated, and full of intensity. The Cuvée des Célestines is crafted from a selection of the best parcels, primarily Grenache, with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, and Vaccarèse. The wine undergoes whole-cluster fermentation and is aged in a mix of old foudres and French oak barrels for an extended period, which enhances its complexity and ageability.

Critic Scores

"Deep ruby. Seductive scents of ripe blackberry and boysenberry, singed plum and star anise, lifted by an intense floral topnote. Sweet, expansive dark fruit flavors show excellent concentration, with suggestions of licorice pastille and orange pith giving the wine an exotic character. Shows outstanding clarity and power on the extremely long finish, which is shaped by smooth, slow-building tannins."

"Tasted from bottle include the 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve des Célestins, which was purchased stateside. It’s about as Provençal as they come and garrigue, kirsch liqueur, cured meats, saddle leather and licorice notes literally soar from this ruby-colored, full-bodied, sexy, heady Châteauneuf du Pape that has tons of glycerin and fat, sweet tannin and a great finish. Reminding me of a lighter weight 1990 with its sunny, sexy personality, it’s already hard to resist and should continue drinking nicely for 15+ years."

"Extraordinary richness and vibrancy in this throbbing cauldron of ripeness and spice but with some grainy tannin still in evidence. A wine to be sipped cautiously rather than swigged, so potent is it. Massive richness. No hurry whatsoever to drink this. 18/20 Points"

Vineyard Cultivation

Henri Bonneau represented the 12th generation of winemakers at his Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, beginning his craft in 1956 within the region's conservative traditions. His philosophy deliberately ran counter to contemporary trends: rather than prizing century-old vines, Bonneau replaced vineyard stock at approximately 50 years of age, believing older vines sacrificed quality. He harvested late in the season, often the final grower to pick, waiting for complete phenolic maturity. The 2009 vintage delivered ripe, concentrated fruit across the southern Rhône, providing the ideal foundation for his Réserve des Célestins, released only in years of sufficient quality.

Vinification

Bonneau employed whole-cluster fermentation in traditional concrete vats, eschewing modern standardisation in favour of time-honoured techniques. Post-fermentation, the wine aged extensively in an eclectic collection of aged vessels—foudres, demi-muids, and weathered small oak barrels—for multiple years, sometimes stretching to five or six. No two vintages received identical treatment; instead, ageing protocols responded to each wine's particular needs and the vintage's character. This non-interventionist approach produced wines requiring minimal decanting, often approachable within an hour or two of opening.

About this Wine

Grenache Blend

A red or rose blend built around Grenache, often combined with Syrah and Mourvedre.

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
