    • Description

The soil type in this block as the geology is mostly Terra Rossa soil, with a crumbly red top soil and deep red clay over marl clay with limestone bedrock. The La Roccia vineyard is planted at a varied elevation, ranging from 70 to 100 metres. The vines are 15 years old with a mixture of clones including Pommard, D4V2, 115 and 667 In this vineyard we maintain low yields of less than 4 tonnes per hectare. Our La Roccia is always picked first out the Single Blocks as this block has the lowest yield and therefore the most exposure to the northern sun.

Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately to preserve their integrity and purity. The fruit undergoes wild fermentaton in open top fermenters with all fruit in the 2022 vintage of this wine being whole bunch. After fermentation the ferments are pressed first and then gravity fed to a mixture of second and third fill 225L French oak barriques in our underground cellar. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling. Bottled in June 2023 our premium Single Block Pinot Noirs are matured in the bottle for over a year on cork prior to release in July 2024.

ln the glass the La Roccia has a velvety red/purple tone. The nose is abundant with brooding dark cherry, blueberry, cassis and rhubarb clafoutis. The palate is complex with cherries, currants, charcuterie meats and hints of leather. This wine’s density is powerful with medium body and firm chalky tannins with a full, long finish. We recommend decanting this wine and pairing with a red meat or mushroom dish. Cellaring potential 5 to 10 years. – Steve & Monique Lubiana
