The Antinori family first produced this iconic wine in 1978, and the initial blend was Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. In subsequent years 20% of Sangiovese was introduced into the blend and adjustments were made until the current blend was settled upon.

Tasting Notes

Antinori Solaia 2023 represents the pinnacle of Tuscan winemaking, combining the elegance and vibrant acidity of Sangiovese with the structure, depth and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Produced only in the finest vintages and released in rare, limited quantities, Solaia is one of Italy’s most celebrated Super Tuscan wines.

First created by the Antinori family in 1978, Solaia originally featured Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Sangiovese was introduced in subsequent years, with the blend refined over time to achieve the wine’s distinctive balance, concentration and longevity. This prestigious red is crafted in Tuscany, a region renowned for its historic vineyards, Mediterranean climate and exceptional expressions of Sangiovese and international grape varieties.

The 2023 vintage showcases a refined, cellar-worthy expression with impressive concentration and layered complexity. Aromas and flavours of dark fruit, cassis, spice and subtle oak unfold across the palate, supported by finely integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. Elegant yet powerful, Solaia 2023 offers the depth, polish and structure associated with a world-class Italian Super Tuscan wine.

International On Demand: La Place de Bordeaux pre-arrival offer. Estimated dispatch from April 2027 onwards.

Critic Scores

Solaia sings in 2023. It's supremely vertical with already-integrated sandy tannins, its tall frame adorned with crunchy, sapid forest berries, chocolate, menthol, iodine and floral top notes. Generous and finessed, it's drinking surprisingly well at this early stage and will continue to prosper for the next two decades at least. - James Button

A big Solaia with lots of fruit and spices as well as mint and spearmint. Aromatic. Full-bodied with lots of fruit and chewy tannins. Muscular and juicy for a modern Solaia. Needs three to four years of age to come together. Best after 2028. - James Suckling

The 2023 Solaia offers up hints of blackberry, gravel, incense, dried herbs, mocha, tobacco, espresso and sweet French oak. There's a bit of youthful firmness in the tannin that needs time to soften, but that should not be an issue for long. Cabernet Sauvignon speaks with tremendous eloquence as hints of grilled herbs, tobacco, incense, leather and gravel stain the incisive finish. There's a lot of wine here. - Antonio Galloni

A sheen of new oak wraps around flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, mineral and vanilla. There’s fine depth, a supple texture and dense, well-rounded tannins for support. Beautifully balanced and long; give this three to five years to shed its youthful exuberance. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2029 through 2047. - Bruce Sanderson
