Tasting Notes

Massetino 2024 is the second wine of the legendary Masseto, produced at the same exceptional Bolgheri estate with the same uncompromising pursuit of quality. First released with the 2017 vintage, exactly 30 years after Masseto’s inaugural release, Massetino reflects the estate’s distinctive terroir and refined winemaking philosophy.

Crafted from a rigorous selection of wines and parcels considered for Masseto itself, this prestigious Bolgheri red wine brings together Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It shares the DNA of its celebrated elder sibling, combining power, opulence, structure and elegance in a compelling expression of the Tuscan coast.

With its distinguished pedigree and limited availability, Massetino 2024 is a highly anticipated addition to any fine wine collection. International On Demand: La Place de Bordeaux pre-arrival offer. Estimated dispatch from April 2027 onwards.

Critic Scores

Gorgeously refined and elegant, cool at the core if a little closed at first. Subtle blueberry and walnut shell and floral notes, from the Cabernet Franc. Gorgeous texturally. Sheets of cashmere. The tannins are remarkable and this is cool to the core. Dense and compact, spherical and with almost concentric circles of increasing density towards the core. Considerable tannin still to resolve, this is a wine of great aging potential that is really only just starting to reveal some of its charms. - Colin Hay

Super tasty, cumin, liquorice root, sweet crushed blackberry and raspberry fruit, brilliant quality, depth and intensity, with a lift and cushion of air underneath, hugely silky tannins with moreish length on the palate. Eleonora Marconi winemaker, Marchesi Frescobaldi owners. - Jane Anson

Vineyard Cultivation

Masseto is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany, within the Ornellaia estate's broader holdings, where clay-limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate favour Merlot's full ripeness. The 2022 growing season delivered ideal conditions: cool spring temperatures limited frost risk, a warm April–May encouraged flowering, and a relatively dry summer with moderate August rains ensured balanced phenolic development without excessive alcohol. The vineyard practises sustainable farming, including cover-cropping, natural pest management, and selective pruning to optimise canopy and fruit concentration. Grapes were harvested by hand in mid-September at peak ripeness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and cellar to select only the finest berries for this single-varietal wine.

Vinification

Masseto grapes fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using selected yeasts, followed by extended maceration (around 30 days) to extract colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity. Malolactic fermentation began naturally or under controlled conditions, contributing secondary flavours. The wine was then transferred to new and lightly-used French oak barrels (typically 100% new for Masseto) where it matured for approximately 18 months, receiving regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) to build richness and texture. Following barrel maturation, the wine underwent a short period of stainless-steel or bottle resting before final assembly and bottling.
