Critic Scores

Bottled in the first week of December 2025, the 2023 Masseto is deeply expressive and layered, with aromas of wet stone, mint, vanilla, and petrichor, alongside a striking sense of chalky minerality. As it opens, notes of lavender oil, juniper, rosemary, and Amarena cherry coated in dark chocolate emerge with remarkable clarity. Full-bodied, it delivers power without weight, combining opulence with restraint. The tannins are finely structured, the acidity vibrant, and the length profound. This is a vintage built on precision and energy, with a structure that will reward patience over the long term. Drink 2028-2050. - Audrey Frick

More expressive than Massetino, but also a little intimate and restrained at first. You seek it; it’s not revealing too much for now. But it is gorgeous in prospect. Deep, dark, rich, compact but undemonstrative. When it does start to relax and unfurl, its florality is miraculous. Big blooms – hyacinths, maybe even gladioli! Dark berries and equally dark damson skin, walnut oil, black olive tapenade. A little black cherry and a scraping of intense black chocolate. Peony too. The tannins are so silky. A black hole of a core. So cool and compact. Incredible. Utterly seductive and a thing of beauty. Magical. 99. - Colin Hay

Creamy but reserved raspberry and blackberry fruit studded through with sea spray, liqourice root, anis, fennel, bitter orange peel, cocoa bean, beautiful tension and clarity of expression. Brilliant. Eleonora Marconi winemaker, Marchesi Frescobaldi owners. - Jane Anson

Intense, dark and meaty style with vibrant elegance of balsamic whiffs, clove and slight florals, with a mix of plums and cassis and graphite minerality in depth. The attack is impressive for its suppleness and silky texture, with elegant tannins, graceful brilliant acidity and toasty flavors of cocoa-milk, sweet tobacco and fruits. Endless aftertaste. Best after two-three years but drinkable now as well. - Aldo Fiordelli

Ripe plum, black cherry, coffee, cedar and vanilla swirl around in this polished, sophisticated red, accented by a hint of Bourbon. Expands on the palate, displaying terrific harmony and grace, with a long, complex and spice-tinged aftertaste. So smooth that you may want to pull the cork now, but this should be better in five years. Merlot. Best from 2030 through 2050. - Bruce Sanderson

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Masseto is located in Bolgheri, Tuscany, within the Ornellaia estate's broader holdings, where clay-limestone soils and a Mediterranean climate favour Merlot's full ripeness. The 2022 growing season delivered ideal conditions: cool spring temperatures limited frost risk, a warm April–May encouraged flowering, and a relatively dry summer with moderate August rains ensured balanced phenolic development without excessive alcohol. The vineyard practises sustainable farming, including cover-cropping, natural pest management, and selective pruning to optimise canopy and fruit concentration. Grapes were harvested by hand in mid-September at peak ripeness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and cellar to select only the finest berries for this single-varietal wine.

Vinification

Masseto grapes fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using selected yeasts, followed by extended maceration (around 30 days) to extract colour, tannin, and aromatic complexity. Malolactic fermentation began naturally or under controlled conditions, contributing secondary flavours. The wine was then transferred to new and lightly-used French oak barrels (typically 100% new for Masseto) where it matured for approximately 18 months, receiving regular bâtonnage (lees stirring) to build richness and texture. Following barrel maturation, the wine underwent a short period of stainless-steel or bottle resting before final assembly and bottling.
