One of Rioja’s most extraordinary new-generation wines, Yjar comes from a tiny historic vineyard in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño. Founded by Telmo Rodríguez and based on an exceptional old-vine site, it represents a deeply personal vision of what Rioja can be at its very best.

At the heart of Yjar is a remarkable piece of Rioja history. The vineyard dates back centuries and has been carefully restored by Telmo Rodríguez, whose work across Spain has focused on rediscovering forgotten vineyards and historic terroirs.

Tasting Notes

Yjar Rioja DOC 2022 is one of Rioja’s most compelling new-generation fine wines, born from a tiny historic vineyard in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño. Founded by renowned Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodríguez, Yjar expresses a deeply personal vision of Rioja, combining a profound sense of place with meticulous vineyard restoration.

At its heart lies a remarkable piece of Rioja heritage. The vineyard dates back centuries and has been carefully restored by Rodríguez, whose work across Spain is dedicated to rediscovering forgotten vineyards and historic terroirs. This exceptional old-vine site provides the foundation for a wine of distinction, authenticity and remarkable character.

The altitude and mountain influence of the Sierra de Toloño lend Yjar a distinctive sense of identity, while its historic origins anchor it firmly in the traditions of Rioja. Limited and highly sought after, this 2022 vintage represents the region’s evolving fine-wine landscape and its growing recognition for site-driven, terroir-focused wines.

International On Demand: La Place de Bordeaux pre-arrival offer. Estimated dispatch from April 2027 onwards.

Critic Scores

Dark berries, blueberries, dried flowers and aromatic herbs. This has the precise tannins characteristic of the place, focused and chalky with a saline touch, enticing. Chalky, with fruit. Saline on the finish. Drink now. - James Suckling

This vintage of Telmo Rodríguez flagship single-vineyard Rioja stands out for its incredible purity of fruit and remarkably well-built structure, anchored by gossamer tannins, vivid yet soft acidity and poised minerality. A true accomplishment, especially in a challenging vintage in which drought accelerated the growing cycle. Very complete, balanced and fluid, with a mellifluous core of cherry, sloe and mulberry lined with graphite, tobacco leaves and Oolong. Fine rim of pink pepper, Himalayan salt and nutmeg. A mischievous touch of chalk adds liveliness and texture. This will age beautifully - but it's hard to resist the temptation of a closed bottle. An irresistible, alluring classic. - Ines Salpico

This wine is now firmly on the global radar, and continues to be one of the highlights of my tasting calendar. Restrained, understated, mouthwatering, precise, vivid raspberry and redcurrant fruits, anis, black tea, lavender, poised, drawn out and just an utterly brilliant wine that is worth talking about. Telmo Rodriguez is winemaker of this 3.8ha plot set within his family Remelluri estate in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño, Rioja Alavesa. - Jane Anson

Open and expressive, opentextured too with very gracious finegrained tannins and plenty of layering. A little sweet spice; a hint of candlewax; a delicate wild floral and herbal note too; bright red and darker berry fruits, with almost a little pêche de vigne. Juicy, sapid, ample and with lovely engaging grippy tannins that really pixilate and delineate the midpalate. Lovely. Beautifully composed and very elegant. - Colin Hay

The 2022 Yjar comes from a warm and dry year and was made with grapes from old vines planted with a massal selection of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and others. It fermented in small open-top oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in foudres and barrels of different sizes for 30 months. It's surprisingly fine and elegant, not showing any heat or ripeness, coming through as very harmonious and fresh. It's fine-boned and balanced, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.72 and 5.08 grams of acidity, and it has very fine, elegant tannins. It keeps its quality in a super difficult vintage like 2022. 7,880 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. - Luis Gutierrez
