Description
The M Decanter 2022 isn’t just a release — it’s a declaration. An architectural triumph in Lalique crystal housing some of the rarest stock ever drawn from The Macallan’s casks. Each drop is chosen for resonance, harmony, and presence. It’s whisky made to last not years, but centuries — a bottled heirloom of taste and texture.
In the glass, it is dusk in liquid form: a radiant, blood-amber hue that shifts with every tilt, slow and syrupy. The nose unfurls with gravitas. Fig jam steeped in oloroso. Dried date pressed into leather. Antique oak warmed by candlelight. Tobacco leaf curled like a parchment scroll, and a subtle halo of black truffle, orange oil, and sandalwood. There’s nothing rushed here — each element emerges like a note in a cathedral choir.
The palate is stately. The entry is plush: dried red fruits, cinnamon bark, burnt toffee, and the soft leather of an ancient armchair. Layers of roasted hazelnut, cherry compote, and dark muscovado sugar build with immense poise. It doesn’t attack. It unfolds — expansive, regal, certain.
Mid-palate is where the magic thickens: chocolate ganache, espresso crema, honey-roasted walnut, and a note of incense so subtle it almost drifts out of memory. There’s also a salty tension — a flicker of aged soy, or balsamic glaze — that gives the richness structure. The Sherry casks are at full expression, but filtered through a lens of restraint and control.
The finish is unhurried, warm, eternal. There’s no smoke, but the heat is there — a glow rather than a flame. Figs, clove, almond skin, oak resin, and the breath of age-old wood. This is a whisky that speaks of heritage, of artistry, of quiet majesty. Not for spectacle. But for significance. M is not meant to be opened lightly — it is meant to be passed down.
