Tasting Notes

Amisfield Pinot Noir 2023 captures the essence of Central Otago’s exceptional terroir with a masterful balance of elegance and intensity. This signature wine reveals a vibrant expression of bright, focused dark fruits, reflecting the unique conditions of the 2023 vintage with clarity and depth.

Originating from the acclaimed Central Otago region, renowned for its cool climate and distinctive soil composition, this Pinot Noir benefits from slow, even ripening that develops lively acidity and complex aromatics. These elements combine to create a pure fruit profile that is at once rich and refined.

The 2023 vintage showcases hallmark varietal notes of ripe cherries and blackberries, enhanced by subtle earthy undertones that add complexity and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is beautifully balanced and structured, with silky tannins delivering a smooth, lingering finish. Its bright fruit intensity and focused character make it an exceptional companion for succulent racks of lamb, elevating the tasting experience with layered flavors.

Critic Scores

Complex, youthful and enticing. Core of red and ruby with a light pink rim lead to a bouquet of ripeness, freshness and core of red fruit aromas suggesting dark fleshed cherry and boysenberry, some raspberry then scents of saline laced stone and a gentle wood smoke quality. Dry with textures from an abundance of fine tannins, plenty of polish, acidity and natural freshness. Balanced and well made, a wine still developing with best drinking from late 2027 through 2033+

So juicy and fruity, showing strawberries, raspberries and some ripe oranges on the nose, following through to a medium body with velvety tannins. Mellow and delicious with succulent fruit and a lively, flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Vineyard Cultivation

Amisfield's signature Pinot Noir is grown on the estate's organically farmed vineyards at the foot of the Pisa Range near Lowburn in Central Otago. The free-draining schist, silt and glacial-gravel soils and the dry, high-altitude continental climate encourage long, slow ripening and concentrated fruit. Certified organic under BioGro, the vineyard is worked with clover cover crops, sheep grazing, guinea fowl for pest control and native plantings, with subsoil irrigation to limit water use. The 2023 season ran slightly cooler and later than the warm vintages before it, favouring perfume, freshness and fine-boned structure over sheer weight, and giving a wine reviewers place in a long drinking window from around 2027.

Vinification

Hand-harvested estate fruit was fermented in small open vessels, generally with a portion of whole bunches for aromatic complexity and structure and using indigenous yeasts. Following maceration the wine went to French oak barriques, only a small proportion new, for malolactic fermentation and roughly eleven months on lees before bottling under screwcap. The style is restrained and precise, framing dark-fleshed cherry, boysenberry and raspberry with saline, stony and gently smoky nuances, an abundance of fine tannins and lively natural acidity. It is built to develop in bottle for several years.
