Gentle Folk is the Basket Range project of Gareth and Rainbo Belton, who established the label in 2013 after Gareth, a former marine biologist, turned to wine in the cool, elevated Adelaide Hills. The Syrah draws on Adelaide Hills fruit grown on sandy loam over red-orange clay and sandstone, a combination the Beltons credit for the wine's marked perfume. Farming is low-intervention, with an emphasis on living soils and hand work across a patchwork of small sites. The 2025 growing season in the Hills followed the region's cooler, high-altitude template, favouring slow, even ripening that preserves the aromatic lift and natural acidity the Beltons look for in their reds.

Grapes are hand-picked and handled gently in a minimal-intervention cellar. In keeping with Gentle Folk's approach, fermentation runs on wild yeasts, with whole-bunch material typically included to build the wine's spicy, floral perfume and its slippery, medium-weight texture. Maceration is gentle, favouring fragrance and drinkability over extraction or weight, and the wine is matured in seasoned oak that leaves no obvious woody imprint. Minimal additions and light handling through pressing and elevage preserve the bright black-cherry fruit, peppery spice and fresh, lingering finish. Alcohol is a moderate 13.4%.
