Tasting Notes

Honouring the legacy of John Shenk, the man behind the 18th-century distillery that would eventually become Michter’s, this 2025 edition of Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash Whiskey stands out for its use of toasted-only French oak barrels sourced from the Vosges region of France, naturally air-dried and seasoned for 24 months before being toasted to Michter’s exacting standards.

The result is a rich, full-bodied whiskey brimming with bold spice and depth, balanced by layers of sweetness and elegant oak influence. It's produced in Kentucky using the classic sour mash process, it’s made with a healthy dose of rye and bottled at 91.2 proof (45.6% ABV).

Distillation

Michter's Shenk's Homestead is an annual limited release sour mash whiskey produced at Fort Nelson Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, named for John Shenk — one of the early distillers associated with the Pennsylvania whiskey tradition from which Michter's traces its roots. Sour mash production uses a portion of spent grain from a previous fermentation ('the setback') as a starter to control fermentation pH and consistency — a technique common in Kentucky. The 2025 Shenk's Homestead is drawn from a select batch of barrels matured in Michter's heat-cycling warehouses and bottled without chill-filtration. The annual release varies in profile based on barrel selection. Bottled at 45.6% ABV for the 2025 release.

Provenance

Michter's has roots in a Pennsylvania distillery established in 1753, historically linked to whiskey supplied to George Washington's troops during the American Revolutionary War. The modern Michter's brand relaunched in the 1990s and now produces whiskey from Fort Nelson Distillery, a restored 19th-century building in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky's whiskey district on Whiskey Row. The brand is known for its heat-cycling warehouses, which expose barrels to seasonal temperature changes to accelerate and deepen flavour development, and for barrel entry proof of 103 — below the 125 proof maximum permitted for bourbon — to preserve more grain character.
