Tasting Notes

No grandstanding needed here - just a decade of patience, etched into oak and breathed into rye. Michter's 10 Year Old Single Barrel Rye is not merely poured - it is unveiled. In the glass, it glows a deep antique copper, alive with promise. The nose is a slow reveal: dark rye bread, toasted pecan, warm saddle leather, baked apple, maple sugar, cracked black pepper, and the faintest echo of tobacco humidor.

The first sip lands with authority. Spice takes the lead - cinnamon bark, clove, cardamom - before giving way to deeper, richer tones: black cherry compote, molasses, charred oak, vanilla pod, and dark chocolate shavings. It's broad, layered, and purposeful, each note unfolding like pages in a leather-bound novel.

Mid-palate brings an unexpected warmth - burnt orange peel, hazelnut praline, and toffee brittle - all carried on a structure that is equal parts silk and sinew. The rye grain's signature grip holds everything in perfect tension, allowing sweet and savoury to dance without ever colliding.

The finish is long, slow, and utterly composed. Toasted oak and dark spice linger, underpinned by a subtle herbal whisper - like walking through a sun-warmed field of rye at harvest. This is not a whiskey you rush. It's a meditation in a glass, for those who value time, patience, and the quiet confidence of a true classic.

Distillation & Provenance

Crafted only for our premium spirits

Distillation

Michter's 10 Year Old Kentucky Straight Rye is a rare single barrel expression produced at Fort Nelson Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky — aged for a full decade in new charred American oak to produce the oldest age-stated rye in the Michter's range. As a straight rye, the mashbill is majority rye grain, distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into barrel at Michter's standard 103 proof entry. Ten years in Michter's heat-cycling warehouses — which expose barrels to seasonal temperature extremes to promote deeper cask interaction — develops exceptional richness and integration: rye spice, dark fruit, toffee, leather, and deep oak. Bottled at 46.4% ABV as a single barrel, without chill-filtration.

Provenance

Michter's has roots in a Pennsylvania distillery established in 1753, historically linked to whiskey supplied to George Washington's troops during the American Revolutionary War. The modern Michter's brand relaunched in the 1990s and now produces whiskey from Fort Nelson Distillery, a restored 19th-century building in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky's whiskey district on Whiskey Row. The brand is known for its heat-cycling warehouses, which expose barrels to seasonal temperature changes to accelerate and deepen flavour development, and for barrel entry proof of 103 — below the 125 proof maximum permitted for bourbon — to preserve more grain character.
