Tasting Notes

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, forest floor and fresh herbs escape from the glass with some spicy cedar notes also evident. Delicious spicy red to dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours show terrific drive across the palate. Notions of forest floor, subtle dried herbs and cedar are interwoven through the back half. Finely grained tannins finishing long, spicy and savoury.

In 2010, at sunrise, Callie and her dad and stood overlooking Machu Picchu, an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

While their guide shared stories about PachaMama - an ancient Inca fertility goddess who presides over planting and harvesting (you may know her as Mother Nature) - the fog lifted, slowly exposing the transcendent ruins hiding below.

They were told about the ongoing Andean tradition of giving a toast in honour of PachaMama and in some regions, a special kind of libation (known as a challa) is performed where a small amount of wine is spilled onto the ground to express deep gratitude to their earth mother and to give back to the earth.

This trip inspired the beginnings of PachaMama. 12 years later and although the reins have been passed down from father to daughter, PachaMama still stands by the same core values they wrote down when they started: empowerment, sustainability, innovation and community.

Critic Scores

Perfumed and vibrant, showing red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry layered with rose petal, spice and subtle earthy complexity. The palate is silky and flowing, delivering bright red berry fruit before fine tannins and fresh acidity shape the wine into a poised and beautifully balanced frame. Layers of cherry, spice and savoury earthiness build gently through the mid-palate, finishing long, refined and persistent with excellent clarity and finesse. A graceful and expressive Pinot Noir that captures freshness, texture and Yarra Valley elegance beautifully.
Vino Masters Score: 95 / 100 ★★★★★ Silky, vibrant and savoury

The majority of this blend comes from a vineyard planted in Cottles Bridge in '94. Like last year's version, this is a touch closed, before revealing aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry and floral notes as it opens up. The medium-bodied and gently savoury palate has good depth, with balanced, gently grippy and persistent tannins in support. It's good now but will be even better 12–24 months from now. Nicely done.

The wine combines ripe fruit intensity with elegant complexity, showing dark cherry, cured meat, dried mushroom, thyme, and nutmeg nuances on the nose. It's equally appealing in the mouth, delivering a plump mouthfeel and a silky texture, well supported by grainy tannins, making it harmonious and structured with a lengthy, satisfying finish.

Vineyard Cultivation

PachaMama takes its name from the Andean earth goddess, the label inspired by a 2010 trip to Machu Picchu by founder Callie Jemmeson and her father; the reins have since passed from father to daughter. Its Yarra Valley Pinot Noir draws mostly from a vineyard planted at Cottles Bridge in 1994, in the cooler upper-Yarra hills north-east of Melbourne. The valley's grey loam and clay soils, elevation and cool nights favour perfumed, savoury Pinot Noir. The label works to values of sustainability and low intervention. The 2024 season delivered even, cool ripening across the Yarra, yielding fruit with red-berry vibrancy, floral lift and the fresh acidity that shapes the wine's poised frame.

Vinification

The 2024 Yarra Valley Pinot was hand-picked, with a portion of whole bunches retained and the balance destemmed to build spice, perfume and structure. Fermentation ran in small open vessels with gentle plunging, followed by malolactic conversion and maturation in French oak, a modest fraction new, to support rather than mask the fruit. James Halliday found the wine a touch closed before revealing wild strawberry, red cherry and floral notes over a medium-bodied, gently savoury palate with balanced, gently grippy tannins. The restrained oak and careful extraction give a silky, flowing texture with cherry, spice and earthy length, best from twelve to twenty-four months out.
