Critic Scores

Now that it's in bottle, the 2014 Cote Rotie La Turque has exceeded all of my earlier expectations. It's got those classic Côte Rôtie elements on the nose of smoked bacon, olives and violets, seamlessly entwined with supple tannins and raspberry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky and fine, showing tremendous length and complexity on the finish. On this occasion, La Turque came to the head of the class as the most approachable, exciting and elegant of the three La Las. - Joe Czerwinski - Published: Nov 01, 2018

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2014 vintage presented challenges across the northern Rhône—cooler temperatures and variable rainfall—but La Turque's prime location and E. Guigal's meticulous viticulture ensured ripeness and quality. The micaceous schist soils provided natural drainage and mineralisation essential for balancing coolness with adequate phenolic development. E. Guigal's canopy management and selective harvesting at optimal ripeness captured concentrated fruit within a more restrained alcohol profile. The 2014 vintage emphasised La Turque's elegant, perfumed character over sheer power—a vintage highlighting the terroir's finesse and aromatic expression. Site management and maturity of vines contributed structural refinement.

Vinification

Fully destemmed fruit underwent fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, extended skin contact optimising extraction from the 2014 fruit. Natural malolactic fermentation followed. The wine then spent 42 months in French oak, a period critical to integrating tannins and developing complexity in a vintage of moderate power. Guigal's patient, measured oak protocols—balancing new and neutral barrels—prevented over-extraction whilst allowing phenolic softening, aromatic development, and elegant maturation. Careful oxygen management and regular racking throughout élevage ensured balanced phenolic evolution and complexity development.
