    • Description

Niersteiner ‘Hipping’: An approx. 3.5 ha amphitheatre-shaped bay sheltered along the main flank of the vineyard; weathered portions of clayey red slate soil; more fertile and water retentive than the other sites. Hipping wines are generally open and balanced, with ripe, juicy fruit. As they age, they become more serious, developing the enduring and typical Riesling fruit character.

Gunderloch own 4 hectares of the Hipping grand cru. The site is located in an exposed position on the Roter Hang where the southeast and south-facing slope meet. Its position on the ‘Rotliegend’ formation between Pettenthal and Ölberg is significant, and unites several outstanding pre-conditions for vines. The warmth of a broad lake-like section of the Rhine and intense sun exposure, a wind- protected site and the very weathered red slate of the steep slope allow small Riesling bunches of grapes to develop intense aromas and flavours. The family's prime parcel in Hipping is protected by a row of terraces and the steep flank of the Pettenthal. Hipping tends to yield wines of incredibly expressive exotic fruit and significantly creamy texture.

    Gunderloch

Founded in 1890 by the banker Carl Gunderloch who was also the first President and a founding member of the Rheinhessen VDP. Our working relationship and friendship started in 1988 just a few years after Fritz Hasselbach took charge of the cellar. 1989 produced the first of a series of great noble sweet wines from the great Rothenberg vineyard in Nackenheim. Soon after the estate set records garnering perfect scores in 1992, 1996 and 2001 in the Wine Spectator – the only estate in the world to ever to do so.

The estate owns 95% of the filet piece in the great Nackenheimer Rothenberg which also includes the old Fenchelberg. The other Grand Cru vineyard is the Niersteiner Pettenthal; terroir in these top sites is red slate and clay in the Rothenberg and lighter versions in the Pettenthal producing more masculine and more feminine wines respectively. The Rothenberg Rieslings induce wonderful peach, apricot and spice aromas which carry over to the palate with an additional nuance of almonds and a powerful and persistent mineral finish. The Pettenthal Rieslings are more refined but also with a pear and apricot fruit but without the strong mineral drive of the Rothenberg.
