Tasting Notes
Founded by the late Giuseppe Sesti, one of Montalcino's great traditionalists, Sesti has earned a cult following for producing elegant, long-lived Sangiovese that captures the purity and individuality of this celebrated Tuscan terroir. Working organically from vineyards on the southern slopes of Montalcino, the estate combines meticulous vineyard management with restrained winemaking to produce wines defined by perfume, balance and remarkable ageing potential. This six-bottle collection offers the perfect introduction to the estate, pairing three bottles of the vibrant 2023 Rosso di Montalcino with three bottles of the outstanding 2019 Brunello di Montalcino.
The 2023 Sesti Rosso di Montalcino demonstrates why the denomination has become one of Italy's great value wines. Crafted entirely from Sangiovese, it delivers fragrant aromas of wild cherry, raspberry, violet and Mediterranean herbs, underpinned by subtle spice and earthy complexity. The palate is bright, energetic and finely structured, with silky tannins, lively acidity and a savoury finish that makes it immediately enjoyable while retaining the balance to develop over the medium term. Rosso di Montalcino has increasingly earned recognition as a serious category in its own right rather than simply "young Brunello", reflecting the growing quality achieved by leading producers such as Sesti.
The 2019 Sesti Brunello di Montalcino comes from one of the region's most celebrated modern vintages, combining concentration with exceptional freshness and classical structure. Layers of black cherry, blood orange, rose petal, tobacco, dried herbs and crushed stone unfold across a beautifully poised palate framed by refined tannins and vibrant acidity. It is a wine built for two decades of graceful evolution. The vintage has been widely acclaimed by critics, with Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) awarding 93 points, Walter Speller (JancisRobinson.com) 18/20 and Audrey Frick (Jeb Dunnuck) 96 points. Gambero Rosso has also hailed 2019 as one of Brunello's finest recent vintages, praising its combination of power, perfume and polished tannins.
