Tasting Notes

Sparkling wine is often pitched as a celebration wine, but we see no need to restrict its consumption purely to celebratory occasions. Some of our favourite times to drink bubbles are not noteworthy occasions at all, simply moments worthy of a delicious, refreshing drink!

The Adelaide Hills is renowned for high quality cool-climate Chardonnay, so there was no question as to where we would look for our first Blanc de Blancs. Careful fruit selection and attentive winemaking give a fresh-fruited wine with some nutty complexity and interest from lees contact.

This is an elegant wine with ‘Granny Smith’ apple acidity and almond biscotti flavours combining into a delicious drink to enjoy with friends. Serve chilled — around 8° to 10°C.

Critic Scores

The base wines (100% chardonnay) came from 2020 to ’22, grown at Lobethal and Kuitpo; wild-yeast ferments of full-juice solids in tank and seasoned puncheons. The result is a complex, textured wine not made by the traditional method.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bleasdale Vineyards, founded in 1850 by the Potts family, is one of Australia's oldest wineries and is based at Langhorne Creek in South Australia. For this Blanc de Blancs the fruit is Chardonnay, with the listing attributing it to the cooler Adelaide Hills, whose higher-altitude sites and loam over clay soils suit fine, acid-driven sparkling base wine. As a non-vintage cuvee it is assembled to a consistent house style rather than expressing one season, drawing on Chardonnay picked early for tight natural acidity and restrained flavour. Vineyards are managed for balanced yields and clean fruit, giving the citrus and green-apple profile characteristic of a Blanc de Blancs.

Vinification

A traditional-style sparkling made entirely from Chardonnay. Grapes are harvested early to preserve acidity, whole-bunch pressed for clean, low-phenolic juice, and fermented cool to build a delicate base wine. Non-vintage assembly allows reserve material to lend consistency across releases. Secondary fermentation and time on lees give bready, autolytic complexity beneath the citrus fruit, with the wine finished at a brut level of dosage. Whether the second ferment is carried out in bottle or by tank should be confirmed, though the Blanc de Blancs framing points to a fine-beaded, lees-aged style. There is little or no oak influence.

About this Wine

Bleasdale

Named after Reverend John Bleasdale, an anti-temperance South Australian priest, Bleasdale winery was founded by Frank Potts in 1950 and is one of the longest running family owned wineries in Australia. Originally intending for a life as a carpenter, Potts purchased, cleared and planted his first plots in Langhorne Creek in 1958, and soon expanded his holdings to include over 30 acres.

One of Bleasdale's claim-to-fame is Frank Potts' Basket Press, crafted from red gum trees. The press measures 15 meters in length, is 7 meters high and weighs over 3.5 tonnes. Winemakers Paul Hotker (also the viticulturist) and Matt Laube occasionally use the massive 120-year-old press for reserve wines. Although famed for their full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, Bleasdale also produces an astounding array of blends and unusual varietals. The winemaker's skills don't just lie in red wine production, however, as they craft exquisitely refreshing white wines, sparkling and fortified.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
