Genre: Industrial Symphony — Ferocious, Structured, Unapologetic

Octomore 14.1 isn’t just peat-forward — it’s peat reimagined as architecture. Built on Scottish-grown Concerto barley peated to a fearsome 128.9ppm, aged five years in first-fill American oak, this is the keystone of the 14 series — a whisky where structure, smoke, and spirit reach harmonic convergence.

In the glass, it radiates a brilliant pale gold, almost misleading in its delicacy. But the nose wastes no time: charred lemon rind and antiseptic peat rise fast, chased by sea breeze, iodine, and freshly split firewood. As it opens, vanilla pod, toasted marshmallow, and bourbon-drenched oak begin to bloom, offering a kind of warmth beneath the elemental haze.

On the palate, it detonates. First a hit of briny peat — sharp, saline, and full of black pepper and wood ash. Then the depth kicks in: grilled pineapple, clove-studded orange, honeyed cereal, and coconut husk. The bourbon casks speak loudly here, layering sweetness and spice into the raw power of the spirit.

Mid-palate stretches out into something more elegant: burnt sugar crust, smoked stone fruit, and a touch of leather and oak char. The balance is sublime — fire meets finesse. This is Octomore at its most calculated — a controlled burn, a flamethrower guided by a maestro’s baton.

The finish is tidal — long, rolling, and unrelenting. Sea salt, smoke, citrus oil, and malted grain echo like the ring of iron in a stillhouse. 14.1 is raw artistry. A blast of distilling prowess and elemental honesty that proves Octomore is as much about philosophy as fire.

    Bruichladdich Progressive Hebridean Distillers

Bruichladdich is living proof that the traditional whisky regions of Scotland make no sense. Please don’t think that labelling a whisky “Islay” has anything to do with taste because the truth is far more complicated and interesting.

Built in 1881 when puffer-supplied coal was available as an alternative fuel to local peat, it is likely that Bruichladdich was specifically designed to produce the purest unpeated spirit possible. The great Alfred Barnard supports this view with a tantalising clue – the Laddie is the only distillery on Islay that he does not describe as drying its malt using peat in his fascinating exploration of the island’s distilleries in 1885.

Sadly, none of that 19th century spirit survives, but the original Victorian machinery has allowed an unparalleled legacy of craft distilling to trickle down through the generations of men who make this sophisticated Islay dram.

We salute them, not with bland homogeneity, but with a glorious palette of expressions that celebrate the range of possibilities of this, the world’s greatest spirit.
