Critic Scores

This is a phenomenal new red from San Polo with superb depth and intensity with plum, wet earth and black truffle. Full body. Chewy and ripe tannins and a long and flavorful finish. The depth and beautiful is gorgeous. Needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2022.

95+ points "Released in numbered bottles, the Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vignavecchia is a true beauty with the elegance, distinctive intensity and savory sophisticated flavors that you only get in this storied appellation in the southern half of Tuscany. I tasted bottle number 1,390 of 1,500 total bottles released. With fruit from old vines, the wine is naturally denser and richer. This expression also shows more oak shadings, with pretty spice and smoke that frame the dark fruit. These various elements come together with impeccable precision and focus. I suggest giving this wine a few more years of cellar rest

Aromas of underbrush, camphor and tobacco form the nose along with a whiff of prune. Tightly knit and full-bodied, the palate features black-cherry jam, licorice, roasted coffeebean and toasted notes alongside close-grained, velvety tannins

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

San Polo's Vigna Vecchia vineyard sits at elevation in the Brunello di Montalcino denomination, where sandy and limestone-rich soils impart structure, finesse, and characteristic mineral notes to Sangiovese. The vineyard name references older vine blocks, many 30–50 years old, that produce lower yields of concentrated, complex fruit through natural vegetative control. The 2015 vintage was a classical, warm year across Tuscany with consistent summer heat and well-timed September rains that refreshed the vine canopy. Altitude moderates temperature throughout the season, preserving crucial acidity even as phenolic ripeness advanced. Hand selection at harvest ensured only optimal fruit.

Vinification

Hand-harvested Sangiovese underwent traditional Tuscan fermentation in large concrete and wooden vessels, with natural yeasts and temperature monitoring to extend maceration and build tannin structure and complexity throughout. Fermentation lasted 2–3 weeks, with regular pump-overs and plunging; post-fermentation maceration extended to 4–5 weeks. The wine then aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 36 months (the legal minimum for Brunello denomination)—a gradual, non-aggressive maturation allowing phenolic evolution and subtle wood integration. Racking occurred periodically.
