"In Bordeaux, 1985 is my favourite vintage bar none. Yes, '61 may be more legendary, '49 more revered, but I have bought and drunk a lot of '85s over the past 30 years with unfailing success in the wines being both sumptuous and structured, in an immensely pleasurable vintage. This Margaux may be the pinnacle, a heavenly depth of graphite and cedar-touched ripe, but not overripe, black fruits, the lightest nuances of game and vanilla, and just a gorgeous, ethereal Margaux perfume. In the mouth the tannins are now resolved of course, but the fine-grained, supple nature is lovely and the fresh acidity gives this an alert, still energetic character at 33 years of age. Wonderful fruit, again just touched with cedar and game on the palate, but a depth of blackcurrant and edged by black plum and chocolate bittersweet notes. Long, not fading in the glass after an hour, and possibly with substantial time ahead for well-cellared bottles. Tasted 2018."

"Ripe Bordeaux, lightened edge. The nose is open and very fragrant, many floral aromas dance with smoke and black cherries, behind it the cigar box makes itself known from time to time, a little drug and definitely very playful. Tight and red fruity at the start, seems very fresh and lively despite the clear ripeness, dances on the palate as well as in the nose, shows character and charm, aromatic between red and dark berries, incredibly spicy and with an excellent length in the finish, ends with a fine note of white pepper. Now until 2025+"

"Approaching full maturity, this beautifully sweet Chateau Margaux has a dense plum/purple color and a huge, sweet nose of black currants intermixed with licorice, toast, underbrush, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied with supple tannin and a fleshy, juicy, very succulent and multi-layered mid-palate, this expansive, velvety wine has entered its plateau of maturity, where it should remain (assuming good storage) for at least another 10-15 years. A very delicious, seductive, and opulent Chateau Margaux to drink over the next two decades."

Chateau Margaux

One of the five First Growths from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Chateau Margaux is an estate with a prolific past. Located in the commune of Margaux AOC, on the left bank of the Garrone estuary in Bordeaux, the Chateau dates back to the late 1500s when Pierre de Lestonnac converted the land, then used for cereals into vineyard. The property has shifted hands a number of times but is now fully owned by Corrine Mentzelopoulos, who inherited a portion from her father and purchased the remainder of the shares in 2003. Of the estate's holdings, 80 hectares are planted with red varietals of which 75% is Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the remainder is Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soil is the thinnest in the Medoc with the highest proportion of gravel, whose propensity for drainage assists in the production of fine, silky wines. Its grand vin is a blend of its finest parcels of red varieties and is often described as the most elegant of the First Growths; a charming wine with purity of fruit and finesse.
