Coriole was among the first Australian estates to take Sangiovese seriously, planting it in McLaren Vale in the mid-1980s, and more than forty years of work with sites, clones and rootstocks has made this a national benchmark for the variety. The 2024 is drawn from twelve blocks across the estate's four McLaren Vale vineyards, on the region's ironstone, clay and sandy-loam soils, with the different sites and clones contributing distinct facets. Blending decisions begin in the vineyard to capture the optimum expression of McLaren Vale Sangiovese. Farmed sustainably by the Lloyd family, the vines yield fruit with bright red-berry character, earth and floral lift, aiming for a wine as close in spirit to Tuscany as the region allows.

The 2024 Sangiovese is made to preserve the variety's perfume, bright acidity and fine, firm tannin. Fruit from the twelve blocks is picked separately, allowing site and clonal parcels to be handled individually before blending. Fermentation is on skins to build the medium-bodied structure and savoury grip that define the wine, with careful extraction to keep tannins fine but persistent rather than heavy. Maturation is in seasoned oak, favouring older or larger formats so the emphasis stays on cherry, raspberry and spice rather than oak flavour. The result is medium-bodied with great depth, alluring aromas of earth and bracken, lighter red berries, a hint of liquorice and driving, persistent tannin.
