Critic Scores

This has deep, smoky notes and a quite tarry edge, too. The dark plums and black fruit pastilles are assertive here. Very succulent and long with freshness and composure. This is a very elegant Cornas. Excellent length.

This is brimming with steeped plum, blackberry and cassis notes, inlaid liberally with licorice root, singed juniper, tar and tobacco accents. A lingering echo of smoldering cast iron emerges on the grippy finish, along with a swath of warm humus details, giving this a dense and chewy feel. The core of fruit is massive, but this requires patience.

The 2016 Cornas is cut from the same cloth yet has slightly more density as well as structure. Crazy notes of incense, beef blood, plums, ground pepper, and blueberries all emerge from this perfumed, massively concentrated Cornas that has building tannins, a tight, chiseled mouthfeel, and a great, great finish.

No destemming as usual, fermented in concrete and aged in large, old oak barrels. A tasting of the four main component parts (La Petite Côte, Sabarotte, La Côte and Reynards) reveals a more classic expression than the very ripe 2015 vintage. Though still ripe, the Cornas terroir is in sharper focus this year, with each terroir clearly showing its character. Fresh, defined and floral aromatics abound, with ripe but chiselled, saline tannins and relatively high acidity. An elegant vintage with good Cornas typicality.

Possibly the cleanest Clape I have seen in some time, and not that that is a thing with this producer that for me that I yearn for, or that makes me have a quibble, but it is a notable comment to make. Usually the ‘rustic charm’ or ‘savoury edge’ is quite endearing and rewarding in Clape’s wines, but here, none, per se. From the former mayor of Cornas comes something a little different, let’s say. All whole bunches, fermented in concrete, off to old foudre for maturation.

Just ripe raspberries, faint smoke, clove, brambles and dried herbs in perfume. A rich scent. Flavours roll similarly, quite tight in the plait of suede tannins, the fruit characters lifted, a touch sweet but tempered with alpine herb, pepper and that light smoke (meaty) character. That little roughness of Clape texture is there, but freshness is too, the wine vibrant and juicy, concentrated and bright, a burr of gummy-pucker and stains the palate lightly through the finish. A character filled, satisfying and deeply detailed wine, yet high drinkability is here too. Damn stellar.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Auguste Clape's Cornas holdings encompass multiple tiny granite-rich parcels on the steeply terraced slopes of this Southern Rhône appellation. The 2016 vintage began cool but warmed steadily through summer, with excellent September and October conditions allowing full phenolic ripeness in Syrah. The granitic soils, poor in fertility, force the vines to work hard, concentrating fruit flavours and mineral expression. Old vines (average 40+ years) drew mineral essence from ancient bedrock. This was an excellent vintage for structured, age-worthy Cornas.

Vinification

Traditional Cornas winemaking emphasizes long fermentation and skin contact to extract the fierce tannin and mineral character this terrain demands. Clape's 2016 underwent warm fermentation lasting 20–30 days on skins, followed by extended maceration. The wine aged in large neutral oak and concrete vessels for 12–18 months, allowing slow maturation without new oak influence. No fining or filtration was employed, preserving full phenolic expression. The result is a wine demanding 10–15 years minimum cellaring before optimal approachability.

About this Wine

Syrah

A bold red grape producing full-bodied wines with dark fruit, pepper, and spice notes, known as Shiraz in Australia.

Rhone Valley

The Rhône Valley is in the South of France and is situated in the Rhône river valley. The region has been growing wines for centuries and is generally split into two sub-regions. In the Northern Rhône, Syrah is the predominant grape variety, though it is often blended with other white varieties like Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier, or the red grape Mourvedre. In the Southern Rhône, a wide range of white, red and rosés are produced alongside the undisputed king of the Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The Northern Rhône is cooler than the Southern Rhône and has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winter. The appellations from North to South are Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray.

In Southern Rhône, the climate is more Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most famous appellation but others include Côtes du Rhône, Gigondas and Lirac. Large pebbles are used in the region, placed at the base of the vines to absorb the suns heat during the day, to keep the vines warm at night.

Châteauneuf-du-Papes are blended from the 13 permitted grape varieties, though Grenache usually dominates, supported by Syrah and Mourvèdre. These wines can be supremely rich and complex and typically warrant 5-10 years in the cellar for best results.
