Tasting Notes

Dr Edge ‘Tasmania’ Pinot Noir 2016 is a refined cool-climate expression of Tasmanian Pinot Noir, bringing together fruit from across the island’s distinctive winegrowing regions.

This carefully composed blend combines 50% Derwent Valley, 30% East Coast and 20% Tamar Valley, creating a nuanced representation of Tasmania’s diverse terroirs. The 2016 vintage showcases the elegance, balance and natural freshness for which cool-climate Pinot Noir is renowned.

Recognised with an outstanding 97-point rating from James Halliday, this premium Tasmanian red is a compelling addition to any fine wine collection. A sophisticated regional blend with excellent provenance, it captures the character of Tasmania through the precision and versatility of Pinot Noir.

Critic Scores

A blend of the North, East and South wines, plus clones 777 and 115 with various techniques including whole bunch, cold soak and maceration carbonique, roughly 50% Derwent Valley, 30% East Cast and 20% Tamar Valley, all parcels pressed at the tail end of fermentation to French oak (15% new). This is the most fragrant and complex, with red cherry, dark cherry and damson plum. It has the tannin structure of Burgundy which lengthens the finish and aftertaste. Utterly gorgeous.

About this Wine

Pinot Noir

A thin-skinned red grape known for its light body, red fruit character, and sensitivity to terroir, grown around the world.

Tasmania

Apart from being the most southerly wine region in Australia, Tasmania has among the coolest growing subregions with the potential to make distinctly different wines than in the rest of the country.

Most well known for cool-climate varietals like Pinot noir and Chardonnay (thus sparkling too), Sauvignon Blanc smaller plantings of Riesling, Cabernet and Pinot Gris (more commonly Pinot labelled Pinot Grigio)

Historically, Tasmania can lay claim to being the founder of both the Victorian and South Australian wine industries as William Henty sailed from Launceston to Portland (in Victoria) in 1834 and planted grape cuttings there. Though not conclusively proven, it's believed that John Hack planted vines in South Australia in 1837, closely followed in 1838 by John Reynell.

Warmer vintages (possibly attributable to global warming) has had positive effects on region's industry, allowing grapes in recent vintages to achieve full phenolic ripeness, making for vibrant wines that have been widely accepted as world class.
