Tasting Notes

Founded by Elio Grasso in the late 1970s, Azienda Agricola Elio Grasso is located in the Piedmont region of Italy and is known for producing high-quality wines that showcase the unique terroir of the Langhe area. The estate encompasses vineyards in some of the most prestigious regions of Barolo, including Monforte d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d’Alba.

Critic Scores

Dark, rich, and enveloping, the 2012 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè wraps around the palate with serious intensity. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched throughout. Plum, black cherries, menthol, licorice and cloves build to the voluptuous, explosive finish. The Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè is another wine that is going to require considerable time in bottle, but it is fabulous, even at this very early stage. The Casa Matè is one of the most vivid, dramatic Barolos of the vintage

Aromas of flowers, strawberry and dried sage come through. Full-bodied, firm and tannic. Chewy tannins yet polished and fine texture. Subtle and flavorful.

Vineyard Cultivation

Elio Grasso's Ginestra and Casa Mate vineyards occupy prime slopes in the heart of Barolo, where complex soils of marl, limestone, and silica create the conditions for powerful, age-worthy Nebbiolo. The 2012 vintage presented moderate warmth and adequate moisture, producing balanced fruit with elegant tannin structure—conditions Grasso favours for single-vineyard bottlings. The Ginestra and Casa Mate parcels, each with distinct micro-terroir characteristics, were vinified separately to capture individual site expressions. Grasso's commitment to sustainable viticulture and minimal chemical intervention allows the vineyard's natural soil microbiota to flourish, contributing complexity to the resulting wine.

Vinification

Hand-harvested Nebbiolo from both vineyard parcels underwent separate fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by a 12–18-day maceration on skins to extract colour and tannin. Post-fermentation ageing occurred in large oak casks for approximately 30 months, permitting gradual softening of primary tannins and development of tertiary aromas. The wines remained relatively unaggressive despite the 2012 vintage's natural robustness, reflecting Grasso's philosophy of extraction without excess. Bottling was unfiltered and minimally sulphured, preserving freshness and allowing future cellaring potential.
