Tasting Notes

While we wouldn’t go so far as fat, this unadulterated expression of Pinot is a juicy, medium bodied offering. Given a bit of breathing room, a certain plumpness unfolds with its ripe raspberry and dense dark cherry fruits. This, combined with its lip smacking cranberry juice-like acidity, fine tannins and hint of smoky spice makes this Pinot incredibly more-ish.

Vineyard Cultivation

Fat Bastard is a Pays d'Oc brand from the Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France, created in the mid-1990s by French winemaker Thierry Boudinaud with British merchant Guy Anderson. The Pinot Noir is sourced from cooler-influenced sites across the Languedoc, where growers seek altitude, night breezes and free-draining soils to temper the Mediterranean warmth and retain freshness in a variety that struggles in heat. As a multi-vineyard, non-vintage-style bottling, the wine is built from selected parcels blended to a consistent house style each year, prioritising ripe but supple red fruit. Vineyard work centres on picking Pinot at moderate ripeness to keep the bright cherry and berry character that defines the label.

Vinification

Grapes were destemmed and fermented on skins in temperature-controlled tanks, with selected yeast and a measured maceration to draw out colour and soft red-fruit flavour without heavy extraction, keeping tannins approachable. The wine went through malolactic fermentation to round the palate, and a portion may see some oak or oak-alternative ageing to add a light vanilla and spice frame typical of the house style, while much is kept in tank to preserve fresh cherry and berry fruit. Parcels were then blended to the consistent Fat Bastard profile, fined, filtered and bottled as an easy-drinking, fruit-forward Pinot Noir around 13% alcohol.

About this Wine

Languedoc Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon is oft called by the abbreviated 'Languedoc' - It's the coastal region of southern France from Provence to the Pyrenees Mountains and borders with Spain. With over 3 times the amount of vines than the entire of Bordeaux it's a vast region that produces a lot of wine. Vin de Pays d'Oc and sparkling Crémant de Limoux are two of its most famous exports.

The regions history when it comes to wine is a long a rich one, however it is also home to some of the newest AUC appellations in France, like Cabardès, which was only officially recognised in 1999. The region is a haven for enthusiasts of wine on a budget, for it is here you can find some remarkably high-quality wines without breaking the bank. Given the higher amount of sun hours experienced in the South of France, the wines coming from there are more full bodied and rich than from other more prestigious regions.

In the recent past (1970's) Languedoc region was known to produce vast amounts of cheap wine that didn't help its reputation region at all, however a steady improvement now sees it responsible for producing some great value wines that are generally blends, though not entirely so. Carignan, Syrah, Grenache, Chardonnay, Carmenere, Cinsault and Picpoul are some of the most common widely planted varietals. Grower cooperatives produce some remarkable wines alongside their more traditional winery neighbours.
