Hither & Yon was established in McLaren Vale by brothers Richard and Malcolm Leask, whose family has grown grapes in the region for generations. While the winery is based in McLaren Vale, this Syrah is drawn from a cooler, higher-altitude Adelaide Hills site, giving a fresher, more aromatic expression than the region's warmer reds. Richard Leask manages the vineyards with a focus on sustainable practices and a progressive move toward organic farming. The 2021 season in the Adelaide Hills was cool and even, with a long ripening period that preserved natural acidity and fine tannins, producing a medium-bodied wine with energy, drive and lifted spice.

Fruit was hand-picked and fermented to emphasise freshness and drinkability, the pronounced white-pepper spice suggesting a degree of whole-bunch inclusion. Critics note a struck-match, reductive tension, pointing to reductive handling in the cellar and minimal fining. Maturation was in seasoned French oak to preserve fruit purity rather than add overt oak flavour, before bottling as a medium-bodied, juicy Syrah with creamy tannins, tobacco and spicy-meat character and a fresh, energetic finish.
