Tasting Notes

Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle Iteration N°27 is a masterful expression of prestige Champagne built on the concept of blending only the most exceptional years to recreate the idea of a “perfect vintage.”

This iteration is composed of three carefully selected harvests, 2015, 2013 and 2012, with a dominant base of 2015 bringing generosity and ripe fruit depth, lifted by the tension, freshness and precision of the cooler 2013 and 2012 vintages. The result is a Champagne of remarkable balance, where power is seamlessly matched with energy and finesse.

In the glass it shows a brilliant pale gold hue with an ultra fine and persistent bead. The nose is highly expressive and layered, moving through citrus blossom, lemon curd and ripe stone fruit before evolving into more complex notes of brioche, honey, toasted almond and subtle pastry richness from extended lees ageing.

The palate is defined by its precision and drive. There is an immediate sense of vibrancy, with citrus and white stone fruit forming the core, quickly expanding into richer tones of baked apple, nougat and hazelnut. Despite its depth and complexity, the wine remains remarkably light on its feet, carried by a chalky, mineral backbone and a long, elegant finish that speaks to both freshness and maturity.

This is a Champagne built not around a single year, but around the art of selection and blend

Critic Scores

Impressively aromatic, showing honeysuckle, violets and lavender with bread dough and just a hint of light caramel as well as dried apples, cooked pears and tarte tatin. Reductive with graphite, stone and iodine. Some chalk too. Full-bodied but not at all heavy, turning almost weightless. Nine years on the lees and 7 g/L dosage give energy, length and form. Goes on for minutes. This will age beautifully but is already fascinating, evolving in the glass. Available in the US market in November. Drink or hold.

About this Wine

Chardonnay / Pinot Noir

A blend combining Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the two principal grapes of Burgundy and Champagne.

Champagne

Champagne is a wine region to the north-east of Paris where wine has been grown since the Romans first planted in the 5th century and the region is most well known for the sparkling wine that goes by the regions name.

Champagne is made from 3 grapes. The two red grapes Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white grape Chardonnay. All three are commonly blended though a ‘blanc de blanc’ meaning ‘white from white’ indicates that only Chardonnay was used. Conversely a ‘blanc de noir’ or ‘white from black’ indicates that the two red grapes were used.
A common misconception is that Champagne was invented by Dom Pérignon. Although this is not the case, he made considerable contributions to the quality and production methods used in the region. The very first bottles of Champagne were created by accident, and coined ‘the devil’s wine’ for all the popping corks. Sparkling wine in Australia was referred to as Champagne but this practise has long been disallowed.

Methode Champenoise is the traditional method by which Champagne is produced and if you see Millisime on a bottle, it represents the fact that the wine comes from a particular vintage rather than being blended, which is the more common practice.

Icons such as Dom Pérignon and Kristal are world reknowned, but we find as much pleasure in the smaller Champagne houses such as Gosset and Jacquinot. Magnums are perfect for the festive occasions and half bottles are also available.
