Critic Scores

A grade' cabernet, 85.1% from Napa Valley, 4.9% from Barossa, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. Matured 16 months in 80/20% French/American new oak barrels. While assembling the best cabernet he could put together with his team in the Napa, Peter Gago declared, 'it's all arms and legs, and we can't just throw it together!' He had some Grange and Bin 707 parcels with him for benchmarking and suggested throwing a little in. 'I was more than astonished that this proportion brought it together.' 14.9% Australian looks suspiciously like an attempt to keep it over the threshold of 85% Californian material, but Gago refutes this suggestion. 'We tried 20%, but 14.9% was correct.' The result has been dubbed, 'Wine of the World,' a deep and powerful cabernet of full purple hue that speaks of the density and magnitude that is Penfolds, intricately interwoven with the the sweet fruit lusciousness and ripeness of California. Deep, sweeping strokes of blackcurrant, cassis, black licorice, coal steam and long-lingering satsuma plum all coat the palate. It's wrapped in a confident wave of Penfolds tannins, firm, fine and instilled with great endurance, framed in dark chocolate and coffee bean oak. A grand spectacle with monumental presence and impressive line and length. The standout of the release, (more...)

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Penfolds' Bin 149 draws exclusively from Coonawarra, one of Australia's premier Cabernet Sauvignon regions. Coonawarra's terra rossa soil—a distinctive red earth over limestone—provides the mineral backbone and natural acidity essential to the style. The 2018 vintage was warm but balanced, producing well-ripened Cabernet with firm structure. Penfolds sources from established vineyard parcels that have proven track records for quality Cabernet, selecting mature vines that yield concentrated, age-worthy fruit. The region's cool nights preserve varietal definition whilst warmth builds phenolic ripeness.

Vinification

Fruit was harvested at optimal ripeness and destemmed into open ferments where native yeasts and selected cultures managed fermentation temperatures. Extended maceration of 18–20 days maximised colour and tannin extraction. Post-fermentation, the wine was transferred to a combination of new and seasoned French oak (approximately 50 per cent new), where it remained for 18 months. Regular racking separated the wine from primary lees; no malolactic conversion in barrel was practised, preserving varietal acidity. The resulting wine shows dark cassis, earth, and structured tannins appropriate for medium-term cellar investment.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
