Tasting Notes

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressing instead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internally when developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a 'Trial' !

RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

Critic Scores

Barossa Valley shiraz. French oak. 64% of the oak is new though all of it is a year old at most. This is also titled Bin 798. I’d imagine that this is French oak as coopered in Australia, rather than the absolute real deal, though I’m happy to stand corrected.

It’s warm, plush, ripped with aniseed and sweet, dry herbs, both toasty and resiny, and creamy-smooth to the touch. It’s powered essentially by rich ripe plum and saltbush flavours though soy, sweet spice and peppercorn notes find voice too. RWT always delivers a lot of fruit and oak flavour and it does again here (emphasis on the latter), but there’s something about the formation of tannin that just doesn’t make me swoon. The tannin here is well balanced and integrated but it’s not A-class framing; the best tannin reaches back and pulls the palate with it, whereas here it feels too finish-focussed. That said, the flavour on offer is pretty immense.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2018 growing season in the Barossa Valley was warm and dry, creating excellent conditions for Shiraz ripeness and concentration. Penfolds' Regional Winemaker's Tasting programme focuses on Barossa Valley single-region expression, sourcing from established vineyard partners across the region. The 2018 vintage benefited from consistent warmth through flowering and veraison, producing well-ripened fruit with excellent colour and phenolic maturity. Barossa Valley's distinctive red volcanic soils and mediterranean climate create naturally concentrated Shiraz. Penfolds' sustainable viticulture emphasises soil health and canopy management, ensuring optimal fruit quality. The 2018 vintage demonstrates the Barossa's capability to produce premium Shiraz of structure and depth.

Vinification

Fruit was harvested when fully ripe and underwent destemming before traditional fermentation in open vessels. Hand-plunging during fermentation extracted colour, tannin structure, and flavour complexity. Fermentation was temperature-monitored to achieve managed extraction. Following primary fermentation, malolactic conversion proceeded, developing secondary complexity and softening acidity. Maturation in American oak for approximately twenty months integrated oak character with the concentrated fruit. This extended élevage period allows phenolic softening and tannin development, building structure for long-term cellaring.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
