A wine that flirts with perfection, and should rival the 1986 as one of the legendary Granges produced, the 1998 has one of the highest alcohol contents (nearly 15%) as well as one of the highest percentages of Shiraz in the blend (97%). Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection.

Deep purple-red, it oozes blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice from every pore, the palate a sumptuously smooth velvet cushion of small black fruits. It will outlive anyone who can afford to buy it.

Very deep red-ruby. Smoky, deeply concentrated fruit bomb of a nose: blackberry, dark plum, cassis; creamy vanilla and lightly toasty coconutty oak; and ethereal background notes of white pepper, smoked meats, musky spices, tar and licorice. Profoundly concentrated but velvety-smooth and seamless; impressively muscular and thickly coated with oak, and bound by drying, astringent tannins. Without question the most concentrated Grange of all time, utterly steeped in blackberry flavors; a real show pony. It's also the most alcoholic Grange ever made, and at a declared 14.5% does taste warm and spirity - the first Grange to do so. It also ventures to some degree into the realm of currant and prune. No doubt a brilliant wine, but only time will tell if, with its elevated alcohol and its superripe flavors, this 1998 version ranks with the very best Grange vintages.

Vineyard Cultivation

Penfolds Grange 1998 continues the multi-regional sourcing established by Max Schubert, drawing Shiraz fruit from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Magill Estate in South Australia. The 1998 growing season was warm and dry across these regions, favouring ripe Shiraz development and excellent phenolic maturity. By 1998, Penfolds' Grange programme had established nearly fifty years of tradition in multi-regional blending, with vineyard partnerships across South Australia's premier warm-climate zones. Grange sourcing emphasises fruit quality and terroir diversity, balancing power with elegance through strategic regional blending. The 1998 vintage benefited from consistent warmth through flowering and veraison, producing full-bodied Shiraz with excellent colour stability and tannin structure suited to long-term ageing.

Vinification

The 1998 Grange underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels with manual plunging for tannin extraction. Primary fermentation proceeded with careful monitoring to manage extraction intensity and preserve fruit character. Malolactic fermentation developed secondary complexity post-harvest. Oak maturation in new and seasoned American oak extended twenty-four months or longer, integrating oak vanilla, spice, and toasted notes with the multi-regional fruit blend. The extended barrel time allowed phenolic softening and structural complexity development. The wine was aged further in bottle before release, continuing maturation from fruit tannins and oak-derived compounds.

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.
