I'm on a different planet to anyone who fails to be impressed and delighted by the classically dense, concentrated and alluring depth of this superbly balanced wine and its forthright expression of what Grange is all about. Talk about attitude - from its spicy, smoky, deeply fruited aromas to its brooding core of impenetrable fruit and lingering savoury, tight-knit finish, this Grange shows its pretenders for what they are. Drink 2026-2036+

98Huon Hooke

An outstanding bottle of an outstanding vintage. The colour is still youthful, deep and bright; the bouquet explodes from the glass with toasty, nutty, smoky oak and blackberry aromas, and coffee/mocha nuances, laced with traces of tar, licorice and even crushed-ants. The palate is mesmerising: amazingly powerful, concentrated and intense, yet never heavy nor clumsy. It has amazing presence, and is incredibly long, resonating for minutes after the wine has left the mouth. Undoubtedly a great Grange, still quite youthful at 21 years and will still be drinking superbly at 50, such is its vitality. Drink: 2017-2046.

This wine is astonishingly good. It's better than an A-team Grange; it's destined to become one of the best handful of them all. The smoky-sweet oak's obvious here, but its sexiness seems truly sophisticated, and in any case it's chained to a classic riff of coal, blueberry, plum, freshly roasted coffee and the most exquisite cedary savouriness imaginable. It's ripe, it's tannic, it's entirely hedonistic, and yet it is not at all over the top. This is a wine that stains your memory as much as your glass.

Deep crimson. Fresh smoky coffee, mocha, blackberry and graphite aromas with liquorice herb garden/sage complexity. Generous and supple with dark cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, dark plum fruits and fine plentiful chalky tannins, sweet mocha and vanilla oak, superb mid-palate density and salted liquorice grilled nut complexity. Finishes grainy firm with persistent sweet apricot, mulberry fruit. One of the great vintages of the 1990s. Drink Now-2050

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart.
