Tasting Notes

Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is a wine produced by Penfolds, a well-known Australian winemaker. It is a single-region wine, meaning that it is made from grapes grown in a single area, in this case, the Adelaide Hills.

The wine has a pale yellow-green color and a complex aroma of white tropical fruit, subtle reductive flint notes, and a touch of floral. On the palate, the wine is taut with well-integrated wood nuances, good acidity, and white peach, mineral, and saline notes. The finish is long and lingering with hints of lime.

Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is a versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with food. It pairs well with seafood, poultry, and cheese. The wine is also suitable for aging, and can develop even more complexity over time.

Critic Scores

Pale colour. Classic grapefruit, stone fruit grilled nut flinty aromas with marzipan/ vanilla notes. Beautifully balanced and layered with superb apricot, yellow peach, grapefruit flavours, underlying tonic water, grilled nut / marzipan/ vanilla marzipan notes, superb mid-palate viscosity and fresh lacy textures. Finishes minerally and long. One of the very best releases of this series. Exceptional.

Pale straw with the merest flash of green in the glass and aromas of juicy white peach, nectarine, lemon and grapefruit. Hints of distant struck match, oatmeal, almond paste, cinnamon, candle nut, cashewy oak, quince, macadamia butter and white flowers. A wonderfully pure release this year, although that is no great surprise with this wine. The aromas and flavours are nicely delineated. The wine's travel is textural and nicely focused, with a fine, saline mineral aspect to its acidity and a finish that carries on for a good time.

Penfolds Reserve Bin A Chardonnay has built an impressive track record – here. It’s a single region chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills. This 2024 release spent eight months in oak, 50% new. It all goes through malolactic fermentation, and a very small amount is fermented wild. Price is unchanged at $125 RRP.

This is a wine of elegance, flavour and length. Its style is immaculate, its complexity inlaid, its finish quite exquisitely long. This release, it’s worth noting, is flinty but not in an exaggerated or in-your-face sense, at all. It’s the destination of Reserve Bin A rather than the journey. It carries stonefruit, meal, sweet oak and spice notes, but everything feels like one long chorus, and a gorgeous one at that. This is a glorious Penfolds Reserve Bin Chardonnay.

Bright, bell-clear and light yellow colour; the bouquet superbly complex and layered with cashew, almond, white peach and creamy lees nuances, the palate super refined and restrained but at the same time intense, with gorgeous harmony and silken texture. Soft acidity. A very smart Reserve Bin A.

The 2024 Chardonnay Reseve Bin 24A has excellent fruit drive and purity of fruit, layers of focussex pinelime and praline to open, and tightly wound. Preserved lemon and grapfruit aromas to follow with some flinty notes, a sophiticatd and detailed chamelon. Tense and fine ober a legnthy sustained an chalky finish.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Penfolds' Adelaide Hills fruit selection combines cool-climate vineyards with the house's century-old viticultural expertise. The Reserve Bin 24A designates a premium tier within Penfolds' structured range, focusing on white-wine excellence. Adelaide Hills provides diurnal temperature variation that extends hang-time, building complexity and phenolic maturity. The 2024 growing season benefited from moderate spring rainfall and warm, dry flowering conditions typical of Adelaide Hills' continental climate. Fruit is sourced from established vineyard blocks in the subregion, selected for quality and vintage consistency.

Vinification

Adelaide Hills Chardonnay fruit undergoes cool-climate winemaking emphasising natural acidity and mineral expression. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before whole-bunch pressing to minimise oxidation. Fermentation occurs in controlled-temperature stainless steel with cultured yeast, preserving varietal character. Malolactic conversion is controlled or partial, depending on vintage requirements and fruit ripeness. Post-fermentation, the wine is matured on fine lees with periodic stirring to build mid-palate complexity. Minimal oak contact (or no new oak, depending on reserve designation) maintains Adelaide Hills' cool-climate profile and aromatic freshness.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
