Tasting Notes

Yattarna is the result of one of the most comprehensive, focused and highly publicised wine development projects ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind across generations of Penfolds winemakers inspired the ambition to create a white wine that would set a standard for ultra-fine Australian chardonnay.

Selectively sourcing only the very best chardonnay fruit from cool climate regions, coupled with sensitive winemaking, the style continues to evolve.

Critic Scores

A wonderfully filigreed Yattarna. This release shows all the finesse that we've come to expect from the wine, with pure white peach, juicy nectarine, citrus and apple fruit tones. Hints of soft spice, hazelnut and meadow flowers. A light whisper of flint, creamy oak, oatmeal and biscuity tones meld together beautifully. The tension and interplay between fruit and sapid minerality is fascinating, with supple fruit flowing forth – all pure, mealy and complex. There's a slow glutamic ache of umami as it fades away with a sustained and enduring finish. A stunning, graceful wine, and one that is at the peak of its game.

Pale colour. Fresh grapefruit, lemon curd, lanolin, tonic water aromas with flinty notes. Bittersweet and textured with pure grapefruit, lemon glacé flavours, fine chalky bittersweet textures, attractive mid-palate volume and fresh long indelible acidity. Finishes al-dente/ chalky and minerally. Lovely energy and flow.

The fruit for this very fine Yattarna, a standout for the vintage, comes from Tumbarumba, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. The wine spent eight months in French oak barriques, 60% of which were new, the remaining 40% just one year in age. The colour offers hints of straw and there is perhaps more oak evident at this early stage than we sometimes see with Yattarna, but it is deftly handled and integration is proceeding apace. There is a spiciness already apparent, and notes of stone fruits, citrus and peaches, along with fresh oystershells and limes. The wine has that exemplary Yattarna refinement. On the palate, those alluring lemon and peach notes are even more to the fore, while the oak fades to a minor supporting role. The wine has focus, serious length and is already exhibiting the first hints of the complexity which will surely continue to emerge. A ten year proposition, there is plenty of room for this wine to improve even further. This might not be a great Yattarna, but it is an extremely good one.

Grown in Tumbarumba, Tasmania and the Adelaide Hills. Matured for eight months in oak.

Terrific power, concentration and length. This is a super edition of Yattarna Chardonnay. Noteworthy talc, chamomile, honey, custard and nougat characters melt through grilled peach, lemongrass, cedar and quince. The finish extends and lingers, and is mouthwatering. This is a beautiful, beautiful chardonnay. Wonderful texture, flavour, length and everything.

The power of blending from three far-flung regions is the secret to Yattarna, and small yields in all three in 2023 produced intensity, while cool conditions upheld natural acidity. Kym Schroeter compares its finesse to 2021. Such vibrant energy certainly sets it apart alongside the warmer 2024 season in Bin 311 and Reserve Bin A. A pristine core of grapefruit, lemon and white peach is underlined by crystalline, cool-season acidity of magnificent luminosity and radiance, charging a finish of outstanding line and length. Another magnificent Yattarna.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Yattarna Bin 144 2023 reflects a warm, early Australian vintage characterised by strong spring growth and summer ripeness across cool-climate Chardonnay regions. Fruit sources—Adelaide Hills, Margaret River, and Tasmania—all performed well in 2023, delivering concentrated flavour and natural acidity simultaneously. Penfolds' multi-regional sourcing allowed selection of peak-quality parcels from each region, blended to achieve Yattarna's signature balance and complexity. The 2023 vintage ripened earlier than recent seasons, allowing harvest before excessive heat, preserving aromatic delicacy alongside phenolic maturity. Fruit selection emphasised blocks known for consistency and complexity within Penfolds' established networks.

Vinification

2023 Yattarna fermentation employed temperature-controlled stainless-steel vessels with selected yeast cultures, emphasising aromatic preservation and structural balance. Cool-climate fruit management prioritised acidity retention and complexity development. Malolactic conversion was managed selectively across regional parcels—some portions underwent full conversion for textural softness, whilst others remained unfermented to preserve crisp acidity. Extended lees stirring built textural richness and mid-palate integration. Oak influence was subtle and integrated, avoiding dominance of regional fruit character. Multi-regional blending optimised the final wine's aromatic complexity and age-worthiness.

About this Wine

Penfolds

Penfolds was established in 1844 by a young English doctor, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold. He built a cottage in Magill, on the outskirts of Adelaide with his wife Mary, and it was around this site that vine cuttings from the South of France were planted. Peter Gago joined Penfolds in 1989, and in 2002, he became Chief Winemaker. He leads an incredibly talented and experienced winemaking team who follow the traditions established by Penfolds previous owners.

Penfolds house style wines embrace the idea of multi-regional blending, optimum fruit quality, the use of fine-grained American and French oak and most often, barrel fermentation and maturation. Penfolds has played a big part in the evolution of winemaking in Australia - and across the world. Their biggest viticultural regions include Adelaide, the Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Limestone Coast, and McLaren Vale. In total, grapes are sourced from more than 220 vineyards across Australia and only the best are chosen.
