Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2007 exemplifies the perfect harmony of tradition and innovation in one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions. This vintage showcases Aldo Conterno’s mastery in crafting Barolo with remarkable structure and rich complexity, making it a distinguished choice for connoisseurs and collectors alike.

Hailing from a premium private cellar, this 2007 Barolo stands as a testament to a year marked by ideal growing conditions in Piedmont, yielding grapes with exceptional ripeness and balanced acidity. These elements come together to create a wine that is both pleasure-driven and cellar-worthy, with an elegant expression of depth, warmth, and timeless tradition in every sip.

The wine opens with enticing aromas of ripe cherry, dried herbs, and subtle hints of spice, leading to a palate layered with velvety tannins and a rich core of dark fruit flavors. Its refined structure promises excellent aging potential, inviting moments of reflection long after the first pour.

Known as a cornerstone of traditional-meets-modern Barolo craftsmanship, Aldo Conterno delivers wines that celebrate the region’s heritage while embracing contemporary techniques to enhance complexity and elegance. The 2007 vintage particularly benefits from the meticulous care given to the vineyards and cellar, ensuring a product of unparalleled quality and distinction.

Perfectly suited for pairing with hearty Italian dishes such as braised meats and truffle-infused recipes, the Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2007 is a luxurious addition to any fine wine collection. Critic Scores

Rich and saturated with cherry, raspberry, licorice and tar notes, this red is concentrated and intense. Remains elegant and focused on the grip-filled finish. Best from 2015 through 2028.

The next Granbussia is the 2005, which will be released in 2012. Conterno’s 2007 Barolo impresses for its sense of harmony and freshness. The wine has firmed up nicely since I first tasted it in November 2010, boding well for its development in the cellar. In 2007 the Barolo possesses an extra degree of richness and generosity than is typically the case, never a bad thing for an entry-level bottling. In a few years, the soft, supple fruit should be at the height of its expression. This is a jewel of a wine and a huge outperformer in relative terms. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Poderi Aldo Conterno operates in the Bussia and Romirasco crus of Serralunga d'Alba, where marl and limestone soils produce powerful Nebbiolo. The 2007 vintage was notably warm and dry, accelerating phenolic ripeness; however, carefully timed canopy management moderated alcohol accumulation. The estate's vineyards, planted at altitude on south-facing exposures, benefit from diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity and mineral tension. Aldo Conterno embraces low-intervention viticulture with minimal chemical inputs.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-harvested and traditionally fermented in large wooden vats over an extended period with native yeasts. Maceration on skins lasted 20–25 days to extract the deep tannin structure essential to Barolo's ageing potential. The wine was then transferred to large Slavonian oak casks (no new oak) for approximately 36 months maturation. This approach emphasises terroir expression over oak influence.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
