From plants with an average age of 55 years a wine is produced that has an imposing sensory profile, it reveals it's delicate yet impressive essence with notes of red prunes, redcurrants, raspberries, cassis and wild myrtle. It is enriched by a regal, authoritarian background which dispenses notes of juniper berries, burnt sage and withered marjoram. Full bodied, strong and horizontal by nature when entering the palate, it is a continous crescendo of intensity and vertical unidirectionality through to the finale. Elegance meets strength and generates a wine of unique potential, difficult to replicate. The rich manganese soils confer character and uniqueness. 60% limestone and 40% clay. Better from 2024 onwards. Tasted: Jul 2022

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2015 vintage across Piedmont was warm and dry, requiring meticulous canopy management to avoid stress. Romirasco's aspect and altitude provided natural temperature moderation; the clay-limestone soils retained moisture through dry spells, supporting sustained phenolic ripening. The vintage produced ripe, accessible Nebbiolo with natural richness. Low yields through systematic pruning and green harvesting concentrated flavours in each berry, ensuring structure and ageing capacity despite the warm conditions.

Vinification

The 2015 harvest was fermented in large wooden vats with native yeasts and extended maceration (24–28 days) to extract sufficient tannin structure for bottle-ageing. Malolactic conversion proceeded in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving mineral expression. The wine aged in wood for approximately 36 months, then underwent bottle maturation before release, allowing gradual integration of tannins and development of tertiary complexity.

About this Wine

Piedmont

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is probably the finest wine region in all of Italy, and has laid claim to this since Roman times. It has a continental climate influenced by the surrounding Alps and Ligurian Apennines, and is located in the north-west of Italy, bordering both France and Switzerland.

Piedmont has only 1% of the total vineyards of Bordeaux and 15% that of Burgundy. So while a top Chateaux may produce upwards of 35,000 cases a year, leading Barolo producers will often make only 800 cases. More than half of its vineyards are registered with DOC designations and many are in the Apennine or Alpine foothills, from 300-600m above sea level. Most of the wines are produced by smaller family estates rather than larger holdings.

Piedmont has 46 different DOC and four DOCG regions, and produces the largest number of well known, world-recognized, prize-winning wines. The most famous would have to be Barolo or Barbaresco, whose power comes from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The most widely planted red variety is Barbera although Dolcetto, Muscat, Shiraz and Bonarda are also produced.

The white variety most well known is Moscato, which is often made into frizzante (bubbly) wines known as Asti. Cortese is made into the popular Gavi wines, and smaller amounts of Chardonnay and high quality Sparkling are also produced in the far north of Piedmont.
