Every year Wynns winemakers select a single vineyard parcel of fruit to bottle as a limited edition. This, from the northern Coonawarra region thankfully showed its vibrant nature early on to impress the crew enough , and it has retained a joyful purity from nose to tail. It exudes ripe raspberry and black currant aromas with a back country, wind-borne dustiness, which transforms in the palate to a lathering of vibrant tannins that are still open enough in the finish for all the crimson and purple berry and fruit flavours to find a second wind. Tight and taut with a swirling energy, and bloody delicious.

Here is a wine that comes from the MacKillop Vineyard in the northern Coonawarra area. And it is the most engaging and quite beautiful wine that expresses this variety so well. The colour is deep plummy red and the nose so bright and lively. There’s a real energy evident from the start. Red fruits, florals, and some nice subtle blackcurrant additions on the nose. The palate is a pure and quite brilliant expression of the variety, and the subtle use of oak—six months in seasoned 3,000-litre French oak vats—is so well handled. It allows the fruit to express all of its glorious qualities, a bright red and black fruit combination. It’s a pretty wine, and yet there is structure here that’ll support medium-term cellaring.

Sourced from the Mackillop vineyard in northern Coonawarra; maturation occurred in 3000L French oak vats. The small, taut berries display excellent intensity of Davidson plum, blackberries and violet, all layered with pencil lead and graphite mineral tones. Crushed poppy seed and clove. Tannins are very fine and woven into the body of the wine. This dances on the palate with energy and buoyant lift, making for very exciting drinking now, and yet this still has eight to 15 years of life ahead.
